Frame is welded up now. Welds aren’t the prettiest ever but they’re strong. Battery box is welded up as well. Have more parts coming now. Got the black bird fuel tank from lowbrow. I’m going to be running a coil/ ignition on the top motor mount so the fuel line needed to be on the right side this fuel tank has both option and I love the look of it. This week I’m going to be mounting the seat bungs and seat mount and hopefully get the rear fender mounted so I can strip it down to the frame to send the frame out for powder coat along with the triple clamps. I have a new head light from lowbrow coming 5.75 inch chrome. A tc bros verticals plate and tail coming along with some small parts. Everything is coming along way quicker than I originally anticipated so we’re hoping to have it finished by mid March at this point. I’ll post some pics tomorrow.Comment

Little look at it taking shape. We’re gonna finish all the fab work tomorrow and hopefully get everything out to get painted next week. Just waiting on new tires, oil lines and coil/ignition top mount and it will pretty much be done. I bought this bike on December 22nd so everything came along way faster than I anticipated. We’re going to throw oeverything on tomorrow to see the final result minus paint and tires. Hopefully everyone likes it.Comment

Okay so all the fab work is done. Officially. I couldn’t get the rear fender quite right but I think it’s good to go now. In retrospect I probably would’ve just bought a new fender instead of cutting up the old one but hey it’s my first build and I enjoyed it. I was going to powder coat everything but after getting quotes I really don’t feel like spending 800$ to powder coat the frame and tins. So I’m going to be spraying everything instead myself and save $700. I’m in the middle of the tear down right now. I can’t wait to paint this and reassemble it into an actual motorcycle.

If it's for riding might as well spray it, but I'd get other quotes in future if ya need coating because 800 is high. Bonus for spraying is it's easy to touch up when you decide to change minor stuff.
Alternate option, build a coating oven. I scored an electric range, removed the stove elements and top, and am fabbing a box to sit on top of that out of two old steel lockers (cheap source of prefabbed sheet metal boxes). I'll face the oven up and open the door which I'll either leave attached or remove and hang on the wall for reinstall because most of my use will be smaller parts. My gunsmithbro uses a single locker with a toaster oven mounted beneath it for powder and Cerakoting. It works great so I copied him but the box will be horizontal for obvious height reasons.Comment

So I went from powder coating to just spray and last minute decided to rattle can. The only party getting painted are the frame and tins so I figured if I take my time I can make it look good for around 20$ for everything. Plus I’m going with a simple paint scheme so what the hell. If it looks shitty next winter I’ll strip it down and go with powder coating. Everything. My brother has a friend that can powder coat small parts so I might get my triple clamps done along with some other small miscellaneous parts. Here’s where I’m at:
Ready to prime it. Didn’t take it down to bare metal mostly due to laziness just scuff the factory clear coat
Primed up
Oil tank done. Still needs clear coat but color reference for you guys.Comment

I bought this one on 12/22/19 and expected it to take me around 6 months or more but once I got going I couldn’t slowdown on it. In retrospect I probably would’ve looked for a 91 or newer but at least I saved money on chain conversion. I’m a little nervous about wiring it but should be alright. Do you have a thread on yours? I’d love to check it outComment

What's up guys, I'm gonna start posting my build progress on my Sportster here so I don't flood Instagram with it. I've been riding for the past 7 years but mainly messed with 70s Hondas. I've had a couple of Harleys, but I'm finally at a point where I have the patience to actually see something go from the ground up and stick
My thread is super out of date, I need to update it because it's almost all together now.
I bought mine in like October of 2017 but I didn't start chopping it up til January of 2019 and I'm still not done. I didn't stick with the original engine and trans though, which is the main reason it's taken so long. With the 86-89 frames, the kickstand/jiffy mount doesn't allow for a newer engine to bolt up to the frame because the mount gets in the way. So I've had to figure out an aftermarket kickstand and a bunch of other random hiccups along the way.Comment

Paint is all wrapped up. Just letting it sit and cure before we reassemble the bike. I sanded the frame then primered then wet sanded the primer with 320 grit then primed again then sprayed then wet sanded the paint then did another coat and 2 coats of clear over that. Same process with the tins and for rattle can I’m extremely happy with the results. Once they’re cured I’ll cut and buff everything to really get a good shine.Comment

I’m not quite ready to put everything together because I’m still waiting on front tire, tubes, dyna s ignition dyna 5 ohm coil and mechanical advance unit. But I couldn’t wait and decided to get it somewhat together and over the next couple weeks button everything up and wire it. In the next week I’ll post up a parts list and brand of everything I went with. Surprise most the stuff came from lowbrow customs. I’m very very fond of this company and they have been extremely rad to deal with. No egos just motorcycles. Here’s today progress.Comment

A little more put together here. I had a problem with the cam cover and the breather fitting and had to pull it off so now I’m waiting on a cam cover gasket. The primary cover threads for the clutch barrel were stripped pretty bad and I didn’t feel like re tapping them when I still had to get the chrome removed from it. So I found a perfect raw metal primary cover on eBay for 65$ and am waiting for that so I can hookup the clutch cable. So what’s left is: get new tires installed. Avon MkII rear and speed master front. Install dyna s ignition and dyna coil. Cut lowbrow spark wires. Hook up rear brake hook up new oil lines. Hook up clutch cable and reinstall starter Install new exhaust studs and put the pipes on Wire the bitch up and rip. Unless I run into some serious problems which I can’t think of any that I could(knock on wood) it will be done 3/14. I’m beyond stoked. First build things have gone pretty smooth so far. I’ve also taken my time and not rushed anything and had 90% of my stuff ordered before I cut started it really helped. Hope everyone enjoys. And I will be posting the parts list with links to everything.

So here’s the parts list of most of the parts I used. Aside from mechanical items like baskets and things like that. I’m sure I’m missing a few parts. The only part I honestly had an issue with installing was the Biltwell seat. The way the post stick out for the springs makes absolutely no sense. Any way. Here ya go:
