Rear axle length for new hardtail

After having the hardtail welded onto my 1978 fxe frame I have noticed my rear axle is too long.

From the outside of my axle plates it measures 9 1/2 in... interior is 8 3/4in.

My current axle is 13in thread to nut.

I'm wondering where to start looking for a new axle. What length I should buy and if I could bring my current axle to a machine shop to have it cut.

You must have a provision for axle adjusters. On Softails these are wide washers on the outside of the axle plates. On a factory rigid, there is a similar spacer on the left side only, with the adjuster screw bearing on the axle hex on the right side.

Remember to allow for that, but with that said, you can have the axle cut and threaded for your particular length. Also, you can look at disc brake XL axles, same 3/4 diameter, but shorter.

Easy to measure what you need, cut to length and re-threaded. I had a new Jammer springer with rockers for 5/8 axle, but the axle holes measured 0.630", so went to the motorcycle scrap yard, got a 16mm axle (0.6299") and cut it to length and cut 5/8 UNF threads on each end so I could use the pike nuts I already had.

          That's allot 3.5 in
When I had mine done the axle was 3/4 in too long.figured out it was just a little twisted and narrowed at the axle plates.I think they pulled it out of the jig before it cooled from welding.
I cut a block to size.heated the weld areas put the block in let cool.no more problems

                  ^^^^^^ That sure is a tight fit....^^^^^^^

Will the chain even fit without hitting the frame??????

                  What size tire is that??????

Are you planning on running a fender????? If so what kind?????????

The axle is the least of your worries as far as I'm concerned............

                    The tire is 19

The wheel is pushed as far left as possible, haven't lined up the wheel rear yet due to the axle not tight

Fender I wasn't too sure about yet possibly a "trailer fender"

That's not tight; rear of my rigid Norton has disc 1mm from frame and chain on other side is 1mm from tire and 1mm from frame...(1mm = 40 thou), not touching, wheel straight, chain inline, all good. that's tight.

No, that's precise measuring to make that Satellite wheel fit with Harley rotor and sprocket, noticed the masterlink brushed paint off, just the paint. Rides so good with the girder with shock.
