    Flywheel Thrust Washer Question.

1980 FXEF. Wheels appear to be stock. It is marked as rebuilt by a place called "Harley works" back in the 1990's..

When I disassembled it, one of the thrusts was popped out of its recess. Behind it, was a thick glop that apparently was intended to be adhesive to help hold it in the recess, in addition to the peening.

Over the years it absorbed oil and expanded, apparently popping the washer loose.

The problem is the thickness. The washers listed for my bike aren't nearly thick enough. I ordered bronze .066, but I really need something in the .078 to .082 range.

    1) Looking in the Eastern Parts Catalog, I see these listed for other years, but not mine? Question - Will other thrusts fit my bike? What I have is about 2.090 OD and about 1.415 ID..

    2) The bearing cages are aluminum and all the options I see listed are steel. In applications like an automatic transmission, aluminum runs against steel all the time and there is no problem as long as the lubrication is adequate.. Will it cause a problem here?

    3) From the link above, the washers that came out of it had a weird dish made into them.. It isn't just cage wear. They strongly resemble the second washer from the left in the Eastern catalog.. If that matters?

Thanks for any help you can provide..

You should have no trouble using the stock 6506 thrust washers. I am wondering how you determined that you need something thicker. That said, Eastern does make both bronze and steel thrust washers in different thicknesses. You can use the steel ones if you so desire, but I personally favor the bronze.

      Side/End play spec is .005 to .025.. And I'm at about .050.

I see the thicker ones for the 45 and the Big Twin from 29-73 listed there in various thicknesses.. Are these the same diameter?

Some are the same diameter. I think the larger ones are found in XL wheels mostly.

Are you checking your end float with the crankpin nuts pulled up full tight? It's unusual to get that much end float on a set of HD wheels. (.035 is OK as an upper limit.)

No.. I rattled it with an impact, but I haven't torqued it yet.

Maybe it'll pull up that much?

It will pull up a little.

DON'T assemble this stuff with a rattle gun. That's for taking it apart.

Just checking this side play thing before I do it for real.

              Thanks for the assistance.

I still wonder what that stuff was underneath of there... Maybe they had clearance issues and used that to try and fix it?

If it's grey, it's usually oil residue.

I bought several sticks of heavy wall 4140 prehard tube in sizes that require minium machineing to the id and od of the thrust washers I use then part off the exact thickness. I keep a few Inches machined to size so all I have to do is chuck them up and part off instead of ordering then trying to find out why they shipped 1 short or the wrong size or whatever else they can do to slow the process. They seem to wear about the same as the ones I bought.

Appreciate it, but I'm the world's worst machinist..

I'll call my indy and see if he has some to match up.

If (And this is a Big IF) you had a few crank-pins on hand to try the fit with, ya could get lucky ... ??

                            Jims offers a .025" shorter too ... PN 23961-41ST3

Yeah.. That is a thought. Worst case, I guess I could.

I hate to buy a new pin, though.

I don't have a bunch around. This is first Harley ever.
