Default 1999 Sportster front hub interchangeable with 1982 FX front hub?

    Hi Guys,

I have a 1982 FXE Shovelhead with spoked rims (19") and dual disc. I have come into possession of a 1999 Sportster sport (XL1200S) complete front end assembly.

The front hubs look to be the same exact one but it's hard to say if they are. I would like to use my FX front wheel and tire and mount the newer brake rotors and use the same spacers for the 39mm front end and brakes.

Does anyone know if they are interchangeable? The sporty hub was laced to a Borrani rim some time ago and I don't know if the hub is the same. The hubs look damn near identical though so maybe someone else has some experience with this.

Isn't the axle size different???????? Is the rotor size the same??????

I'd bet they are not the same...........

Why not just swap the complete front end?????????

You may have to juggle axle spacers, but I think you can make the change with no problems.

It's easy to try so I suggest doing that. The 39mm front end and brakes make it worth the effort. The fork stops are different but you can either weld a tab on the neck or run an internal fork stop kit.

Will the inboard side of the later calipers clear the older mag or spoked wheel?

Should, most of the later models had mags of a similar pattern.

Reason I ask is Fab Kevin had to use slimmer Tokico Japanese calipers for his 35mm narrow glide caliper adapters when running stock early mags. I'll have a look when I next have an older 19" off the bike but I've none lying loose at the moment.

I don't have any spoked wheels to check to match OPs but I now suspect spokes may clear as they look narrower at the caliper area in pics.

That's why I asked if everything is the same.............. From 82 to 99 is a LOT of years of changes...........

OP, if you just have a bare hub 39mm spoked wheels are easy to find cheaper than lacing a new rim. They are plentiful on Sportsters.
