    Default sportster wiring question

I have a 2001 Sportster 883. it has no ECM, just wires coming from the timer plate. I'm building a chopper with bare bones wiring. I need to know what takes power to the coil? is it the blk/white wire coming from the timer plate? I know it goes to the coil along with the pink wire but does it also connect to the key switch to take power to the coil? I've looked at every diagram on the interweb but can't find one that exactly matches my application.

Have you looked at the wiring diagram in the Harley manual for your year and type bike?????

yes but it's hard to navigate through 19 miles of splices and sensors and relays and I can't really tell how the coil receives power.

Just need to add ChopCult at the end of your interweb search to find the best chopper info; I copied your thread title, added 883, chopcult, found lots like this one(12 pages of info):

You were impatient! One way to train yourself to read schematics is take clear pics or scan them (or download a .pdf manual) then print them and trace relevant wires with colored pencils. That's how the Air Force taught aircraft wiring for decades and it's well worth doing, so do it.

This non-factory book ( I've no link to a factory manual for that year) has colored wiring diagrams which show the wires you mention: See page 622-623:

    https://www.carlsalter.com/mcpdf/Har...al86_03_TG.pdf

Once you understand that schematic the simple one will make more sense and show you what you can delete.

The only dumb question is one you don't ask so don't be shy and DO perform good wiring (no bulky auto store splices). See wiring threads for more info.
