    1997 xl883 Cams

Tackling my first build on my first bike a 97 xl883. I have the motor pulled and haven’t gone farther than lower rocker gaskets on it before. I have the upper middle and lower rockers off now and removed the cam cover. When I removed the cam cover the bigger cam that drives the crankshaft is stuck on the cam cover itself. Maybe just being a virgin to motor builds and lack of knowledge is there a pin or bolt located somewhere that I have to remove in order to free it? I don’t see anything and I definitely don’t want to pry it out. Any advice?

Well the #2 cam does have the ignition rotor attached, so did you remove all the ignition stuff from the cam cover before removing it?

Do you have a factory service manual and factory parts book?

Get them, do NOT try to figure it out yourself, and use the parts catalog exploded views along with the service manual to assist you.

You'll more than pay for the books which are the best tools you can have for wrenching Harleys. You'll be glad you got them!
