    Oxblood's Evo build

Like I don't have enough projects already, I decided I would build a big twin Evo... Maybe starting a thread will keep me motivated.

Picked up an engine from from a "Reputable Builder" over on Instagram. I thought he was a cool guy, I met him at the Rally in the Alley here in Vegas last year. Builds engines too so that's a plus. Just a "fresh", mild 80" with low compression that pukes oil from the case seam to get things moving.

Then I raided a buddies parts pile for my old replica springer, a transmission, and a Paughco frame. The only front wheels I could find were an 80 spoke or a fat spoke lol.

Dumped it off in the garage with the rest of the projects...

Got a buddy stitching me up a matching solo seat, pillion, single sided saddlebag, tool roll, and bedroll. I also have a hex oil tank on the way. Plan is to keep it simple with a Sportster tank, some Regetta garage bars I have laying around, and a jockey.shift.

We will see how it goes...

Time to start clicking around and ordering parts. First stop was over to Lowbrow customs for a small replica Ironhead Sportster tank and petcock. Keeping things simple this time around.

I don't know much about this frame but I did notice it is set up for a pogo seat with a bushing in the seat tube. LeBeef Kustom Metal Works has a rad chopper seat mount I have been lusting over for a while. This finally gives me a chance to use it.

Now to the technical question. This frame looks to be set up for a 4 speed. I have a solid mount 5 speed I got with the frame so I would like to use that if possible. Vulcan makes a 5 speed adapter plate. Is this a drop in and go type deal? I see multiple offsets. If I'm running a 150 tire do I do 0" offset? School me on these big twins!

What does Vulcan say? It never hurts to ask the maker.

I can't find a phone number so I filled out their email form. Just thought someone on the forum might know and then it would be in a public place for people with this problem in the future to see. I know Paughco makes a similar plate so I'll call them on my break...

5 in a four speed frame plate is good to go. No offset needed for 150 tire. You might get a minor amount of chain rub depending on tire selection.
Michelin's run a bit wider than advertised. Dunlops are a fuzz small.

Perfect man, that's exactly what I needed to know! Dunlop is what I have floating around the garage.

Be advised.... if you do have an issue with clearance, small offset trans sprocket and rear sprocket spacers are out there.

I had a hell of a time with chain alignment on mine. I ended up pulling the spacer from the trans and cutting it down. Runnin a skinny tire so that wasn’t my issue. Trans sprocket offsets were either too far in or too far out.

Thanks again, that is exactly the information I was looking for. I'm picking up my trans tomorrow and the engine gets here next week and then the fun begins..

Made the run from Vegas to Phoenix and back last night to grab the engine. These aren't the gas tank, oil tank or trans I'm gonna run but I couldn't resist throwing parts at it. I also dug out my satellites and am thinking about running them...

I don't know what this intake was for. It was a RamJett marked "1". It is for an Evo but I don't know what the flange was designed for. Quick trip to the drill press and it's for my Super E.

Keeping things simple with a Ironhead tank and Ford spare tire ring. Went to plug a hole in the backbone and dropped the slug down there. Need to pull it apart and shake it out. Then I'll get the frame welding done...

I've got a couple of those small single piston GMA calipers laying around with no brackets. I whipped up a quick drawing in fusion.

Then fabricated a prototype out of pizza boxes to check fitment...

So far so good, next step is to machine one out of aluminium or have one laser cut out of steel. The steel is quicker / cheaper for me so I may go that route for now.

Still kicking. Trying to piece together a open belt drive but I think I got a mixed up batch of parts. I tossed a 2" over springer on there to see how she sits. The frames is almost done, just little parts holding me up at this point.

Inching along at a glacial pace, but the end is in sight.

                              Since the last post:
                              • made some bars
                              • found a coffin tank
                              • rebuilt a 4 speed to run instead of the 5 speed
                              • snagged a bdl sh500 to tie it together

                              Left to do:
                              • Chrome the bars, rockers, and brake mount
                              • Swap wheels
                              • plumb and wire
                              • A bunch of small stuff...
