    MOTORCYCLE IDENTIFICATION BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN)

    A guide to the identification of all makes and models of motorcycles (1986 and earlier) including off-road machines and mopeds

    VIN SYSTEMS
    "Prior to 1980, each manufacturer adopted and put in use their own method of identifying their product...by 1981 a new system was developed...a move to standardization of the VIN...the VIN system in use today and described as a "17 character VIN rigid as to content and position and including a 'check' digit...the first three characters identify the nation of origin; manufacturer, make and type of vehicle, the second section contains 5 characters and identifies the vehicle's attributes...the ninth character is the "Check Digit" and is intended to verify the accuracy of the VIN as to the sequence and format. The third part of the VIN is 8 characters in length and identifies the model year, plant and sequential production number...See the table to enable you to decode the VIN's "Check Digit"...

          Harley Davidson Sportster Troubleshooting (82 pages)

          This chapter covers troubleshooting procedures.
          Each section provides typical symptoms and logical methods for
          isolating the cause(s).
          There may be several ways to solve a problem, but only a systematic approach will be successful
          in avoiding wasted time and possibly unnecessary parts replacement.

          An engine needs three elements to run properly:
          correct air/fuel mixture, compression and a spark at the right time.

          If one basic requirement is missing, the engine will not run.

          If buildin' old school choppers was easy, anyone could do it... ain't nobody said it's gonna be easy...

              Machinery's Handbook 27th edition which is fine since core information changes very little as far as what concerns bikers. .edu domain so not an evil website.

              Every mechanic should have one and nearly every machinist does, If you use it a lot the hardcover is very fast to use. These are so historically popular than many machinist's tool boxes have a matching drawer!

                Velocette, in general, used Webb girder forks on their motorcycles from the late 1920's to the end of the 1947 season for their road singles...

                  Conversion of 3-Brush Generator to 2-Brush Generator for Greater Output

                  Convert the 3-brush generator to a 2-brush generator; the 32E was first used in the HD V-twins in 1932.
                  Converting the 3-brush to 2 brush generator starts to charge earlier, gets up to maximum output faster, output doesn't drop off as speed increases, generator output is then always matched to the demand, can run a sealed battery.

                  See rebuild here using field coils from a '58 - '64 Panhead, along with a copy of the April 6, 1960 Harley Service Bulletin No. 418; Conversion of 3-Brush Generator to 2-Brush Generator for Greater Output:

                            MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE

                            These teacher's materials are for a 19-unit, 877-Page competency-based course on entry-level motorcycle mechanics at the secondary and post secondary levels.
                            The 19 units are:
                            (1)introduction to motorcycle repair; (2) general safety; (3) tools and equipment; (4) metric measurements;
                            (5) fasteners; (6) service department operations;
                            (7) motorcycle engines; (8) battery and electrical service; (9) carburetion and fuel systems; (10) wheels and tires;
                            (11) steering and suspension; (12) brakes; (13) clutches;
                            (14) starting systems; (15) basic ignition tune-up;
                            (16) basic engine tune-up; (17) basic' chassis tune-up; (18) assembly and pre-delivery; and
                            (19) one-cylinder engine top-end service.

                            The first section is designed to show teachers how to use the materials and includes an explanation of instructional elements, an instructional task analysis for each unit; a list of tools, equipment, and materials; and a list of 25 references.

                            The instructional elements for the units include: objectives, suggested activities, information sheets, transparency masters, assignment sheets, answers to assigner sheets, job sheets, tests, and test answers. Some elements, such as the information sheets, include photographs, diagrams, and line drawings.

                              Material Properties Database

                              MakeItFrom.com is a curated database of engineering material properties that emphasizes ease of comparison. It is not a datasheet dump: every listed material is an internationally recognized generic material. The data is sourced from published standards, academic literature, and supplier documentation.

                              To find information on a particular material, browse from the list below, or search from the menu. Aside from searching by material name, you can also search by property values. Once on a material's page, you can search for a second material for a side-by-side comparison.

                                Fake Bearings and Bearing Identification

                                Until talking to our Friends at ERIKS and TIMKEN in 2017, we had no idea just how widespread and serious the problem of counterfeit/fake bearings has actually become.

                                Most of us were probably aware that cheap bearings are available on the Internet and that, basically, you get what you pay for.

                                However, what we were not aware of was the extent to which branded counterfeit bearings are being sold – as the real thing!
                                The counterfeiters have cleverly copied not only the bearings themselves, but also the branded packaging that they are sold in!
                                So it becomes very difficult for Joe public to tell the difference and most people are always looking for a bargain and cheaper prices...

                                If buildin' old school choppers was easy, anyone could do it... ain't nobody said it's gonna be easy...
