Default Rear Mechanical Drum Backing Plate Spacing

Is my plate suppose to stick out this much from the drum or is it suppose to be flush? maybe I need to lathe the shoulder on that space axle to make the lip even?

    Thanks in advance.

There is supposed to be a dust ring fastened with the sprocket rivets that fills the space. I would not alter the sleeve.

Any consequences for not running one besides the obvious?

Don't know much about the set about. It came with this project bike. without the spacer it sits a little bit lower. the shoes aren't too wide. Had a guy lathe the drum and put new pads just recently. Sorry getting my house tented for termites at the moment so I cant measure anything.
What aftermarket company do you guys usually go to for mech hubs and axle/spacers? I don't want to go to the swap and pay top dollar for a roach set up

I don't buy aftermarket parts, most of it is junk............

If you want OEM look on ebay and other places and ask many questions and for good closeup pics............
