Rebuilding my S&S Shovel... That was invaded by idiots at some point in time.

I'm waiting on my frame work to get done so I can start my '78 FX build and decided to tear into the motor to see what I needed to do. I was planning on going through the top end and inspecting the bottom end. It had some red rtv oozing out from around the rocker boxes and when I took them off they looked like this. So do all the James gaskets with the red silicone bead in them do this over time or did someone add silicone to this? lol

    Just wondering!

^ +1 That is NOT an RTV printed gasket gone bad. Those are idiot tracks, guy maybe thinkin' he's puttin' a water pump on his Buick.

Bad news is that sealer if it gets loose in the oil system can cause all sorts of mischief.

Haha ok, I figured that was it but just wanted a second opinion from someone who knows what they're looking at. Jim, I plan on taking the motor down and rebuilding the oil pump and replacing all the gaskets and stuff anyway so hopefully I won't pieces stuffed in the motor lol.

I really just wanted to see the motor apart, curiosity mostly but I pulled the heads last night and there are some light rust spots on the cylinders, it has 2 different head gaskets and 2 of the 5 head bolts on the front cylinder were pretty much hand tight lol.

I think I'm about an hour or so from @Dragstews may have to give him a call and see what it would cost to get the heads reworked and see what he thinks about the overall condition.

            LOL!

I'm not totally against the use of stuff like Mega Copper but "apply judiciously" doesn't seem to be in most user's vocabulary. They squeeze out a bead straight from the tube when all that is needed is a paper thin smear with a finger.

So right now we're in it for the S&S roller rockers and S&S rocker boxes (expensive, but damn they look good ). I did some looking on the Leineweber L-3S cam you showed me, and their site says it "requires minor head work", will my heads need this as well? Seems like a good choice though.

                Thanks!

They will be checked, but most likely S&S has made these heads with those mods in mind ...

If a belt primary, not unusual to try to seal up those spines to keep oil from seeping. That is way different than having a glob of silicone sealer inside the rocker box.

Where they globed on the silicone is after the fact ...

The only place oil can come from to travel down the splines is at the bearing and spacer union ..
There's no way to put a thin layer of silicone on those mating surfaces cause of the lip on the spacer that's under the motor shaft seal .... unless ...

This spacer doesn't have the lip ...

That's pretty sweet, any mods needed to run that Drag?

I'm planning on running this primary:

It uses a later model starter from the Evo bikes.
