Some of you guys on here do some killer paint work, what type of buffer do you use on new paint?

I don't know if I qualify as killer work, but I do enjoy doing it.
I have a large industrial strength buffer that I use for cars or boats, but found it is too much for bikes and if I try to use it I burn through at the transitions and edges.
What I found works really well for bikes is the cheap ass Harbor Freight unit. The one I am using is the 6 in. 5.7 Amp Heavy Duty Dual Action Variable Speed Polisher. The pads are cheap, ( and are cheaply made ), I think I went through 3 of the "rough" pads and 4 of the finish pads, but to be fair the sharp edges on the frame ate several of those!
The best thing is the orbital nature virtually eliminates the swirl marks I sometimes get from the big guy.

edit: As important as the buffer, is the compounds you use. I am 100% a Meguires guy. I get great results and then finish up with plain old Johnson's Paste wax ( Same stuff I use on my table saw and planers. )Last edited by DoomBuggy; 05-03-2019, 9:06 AM. -
I don't have to buff my paint but Dave just got through getting a bunch of stuff that he said works great.....

Welp, I can paint perty nice with no peel, But I always ran down to napa and bought a pad, wich i then forgot what was what.

with above, I do eye the Flex
But mainly you need to learn the color code for the pads
I am using Lake County pads 5.5 mostly and 6" with hook set system , hook and loop if you like. also chemical guys.
3m backing plate and a few other brands backing plate in 5 and 6" that are hook and loop
I have Yellow pads for heavier cut , orange for a medium to light cut. blue for polish and sealers along with black for polish and same.
also white for polish and red pads for waxing.

you always want the polishing pad lager than the hookset also
I use 3m compound, 3m machine and a heavy 3m compound I dont have the numbers off hand for them
aside from this I also have Meguiar's M20532 Mirror Glaze Ultra Finishing and another grade of there polish and there compound also.
the cool thing is you can polish with pads that you would use for light cutting to waxing to build a super luster the same goes for with pads depending on scratches ect, they also have products that are a sealer polisher and let me tell you that the Meguiar's wax is awsome , its is worth every penny. you use a da with wax and it really looks awesome.
aside from this I have hookset sand paper wet dry from 1000 1500 2000 3000 5000 and some 800 I use with interface between the sand paper and hook set pad. you can also level fast with this . you use a spay bottle to wet as you use the da
the guns I use are Iwata LPH 400 I have a silvercap for clear coat and a lph400 for base coat and single stage set at about 2 Bar for both guns with fan almost all the way open.
anything I paint now will be leveled and brought out with the buffing, really minor leveling and imperfections if any from painting.Comment
