Before you put that tranny back together, look into replacing that main drive gear bearing with an early setup. The narrow caged bearing does not hold up as well as the loose rollers. Your machinist can bore the case to fit the early bearing race. Just a thought

Ive looked at that, and while there are benefits, I go from simply pressing a bearing to becoming beholden to a machinist to the task as well as subsequent repairs to this setup which becomes quite complex going forward.

Holy smokes. As a fresh owner of an 82 FXS... I'm glued to this thread (and officially overwhelmed/terrified of what I've got myself into). Ha.

Nice work tho man. I appreciate all the photos and descriptions and attention to detail. I'll re-read this a few hundred times for sure.

The original AMF manual is fantastic. It's a good idea to study it and become proficient. Its much cheaper and more rewarding to do the work yourself.

The videos from where these stills came are starting to slowly come out under another thread here

Due to issues I was having sucking oil into a valve guide into my rear cylinder I will need to disassembly the top end of my motor. I've decided to document this work as I do with my Yamahas'. Furthermore, I have a tick in the front from an unknown clearance issue that I have the opportunity to address so I can also repair that
