Time to get the motor together ....

I have a wonder about what cam you have in mind of running, the one that it has is good for many more miles or order one of your choice...

This coming week assembly will take place ...
Should go together pretty fast being most all piece work is done and over.
Most all work yet to be done is on the lower-end. (Fit the pinion bearings, checks on piston kiss and rod swing, finish the balance chart and drilling the flywheel holes, check breather open and closing timing, set gear lash on pinion gear to cam gear etc) ...

Throw a few more screws in "The Crate from Hell" ...

Timken loaded.... Nice fit there, bearing is right on with the end-play..

Getting set up to lap the pinion case race ...
Hope it's not over max oversize bearings, if so will be needing a new race....

On to the cam bushing ....
Wanted to get it out of the way...

Well Poo ...

I must buy 6 sets of pinion bearings in order to pick the set that will be used.... (Plug Fit)

In the above photo of the bearing being mic-ed shows the bearing being 0.0015" under the std size...

Well how bout dat ..!! ... I first hit the case race a few spins with the lap to get a idea of how much lapping I would be in for. .. Wasn't all that bad, loaded the old bearings and new shaft for a shake test... Holy Mosley, it had a bunch... Thought it might need a new race ... Went ahead with a little more lapping till I got a nice satin finish all the way around the ID and stopped right there.. Did some math with using new bearings (0,0002" oversize) and set up a dial bore gauge. With those oversize bearings and the new Jim's pinion shaft, I have right at 0.0009" running fit ... That's right on the specks...



Shake test with the new bearings felt oh so good...



On into another check ...
The cam cover is a new re-pop and most likely comes with the bushings already fitted, but I can relate to the Boys from Missouri ...

Just to make sure ....





My Chrome Guy is real good about not getting any plating on or in the bushings.

Suddenly I'm feeling Old ...



When S&S Cycle calls me up for info on doing a 3-5/8" Big Bore on stock Knuck case's ....

Told em, there has been people who has done that, but they're skating on thin ice with those weak-ass cases...



When the Mo-Co started making the FLH in 55 is when they started making their cases with more meat in em...

Moving on to another chore to nail down are the jug base studs...
Had to install the Shovel 80" studs being the S&S jugs have a fat flange like the 80" jugs have...
We are using the S&S stainless steel Base nuts which requires the stud to be a certain height or the nuts will bottom out on the studs since they have a blind hole...



Got some trimming to do ....

About two threads had to be ground off ...
