Gonna guess...you mention it may have had a primary belt, so that would mean the crankcase breather / mist tube would have gone into the primary to provide some chain lubrication; with the change to belt, that breather port was shut off and a new one was installed at that rear case location - not sure what, if anything, was there before though

      aha...
      AKA, 'PukeTube'
Thread: 58 panhead "puke tube" alteration
I'm helping a friend put a 88" 58 pan/shovel basket case in a wishbone frame. It was a running motorcycle. The spot for puke tube is different than my 41' & 63' bikes I have. On my 63' the boss that this fitting is in is there but it is not not tapped out ( it is blank.). It has an open belt drive and an unknown

About the flywheels that came out of this motor...
Was readin' that with a change to the larger crankpin on the 80" wheels, you can offset the new bore by 1/8" to gain an extra 1/4" stoke, for a 86" engine...any way to see that without disassembly?

What Tri is saying above is:

The U's has a small crank pin... In 41 the birth of the FL models came on line sporting a much larger crank-pin..
In the hands of a good machinist, the tapers on the U's wheels can be enlarged to the FL's pin dimensions, by doing a off-set going to the FL pin, a gain in stroke can be a accomplish....

Ya, that's it...and I thought about it, easy to check is simply by measuring it; I was thinking at first to measure the end of the crankpin, but you would need to know those dimensions - instead, could just measure the stroke before pulling the cylinders,or measure the crankpin throw. By knowing the specs of the stock stroke, you would know if it had been stroked that extra 1/8".
              '37 - '48U, 74" and 80" stock stroke is 4-9/32" (4.28125"), with flywheels measuring 8.28125" diameter. The larger tapered crankpin is 1-1/4".

82" flywheels (4-3/8" stroke, with 3-7/16" bore = 1343.7cc ) can also be built; this is the limit of the 1350cc Bonneville land speed record class.
If buildin' old school choppers was easy, anyone could do it... ain't nobody said it's gonna be easy...

Because the wheels are a smaller OD I assume the scapers were built up?

Seems that the super rare Hot-Rod (Of the day) U crank has found a new home in Canada, will be spinning in a 47 Knuck motor...

Now that motor will have a bundle of antiquity, historical and vintage parts in it...
Hahaha ... Well, the crank is getting back to the era that it came from being 47 was next to the last year the U's was made...

That info is from Victory Library; here is what they say about scrapers; nothing about build up:

"The flywheels are 8.28125” outside diameter which will safely clear the case scraper in all U-Series motors."

"The flywheels are 8¼” (8.25”) outside diameter which will safely clear the case scraper in all U-Series motors, but give slightly excessive scraper clearance in 1940-54 OHV engines, and may require scraper machining in 1936-39 EL engines."

I know this modern crate technology can be tough on you Old Timers. Hahaha! I'm just teasing. I'm so happy you are working on this. Check out what Ive sold off so far to pay for this. I almost cried!

I bet that was one fine running bike..... Looking at him I'm not surprised that he would build a bike like he did....
