Some San Diego History
In 1979 I was an E-6 sailor in San Diego - we hade 3 little kids. The wife is a writer and has been published a few times - this was the first for money. She wrote this and sent it off in April or May as I recall then forgot about it. She got a letter from Easyriders in December informing that the story would be in the 80th issue in Feb 1980 - and a check for $125. Pretty cool. As I recall we used the money for Christmas presents for the kiddies.
In the original story the bike was a Panhead - her favorite motor, we'd had a couple - but they edited it to be about a 80" Flathead for the 80th issue. But that was the only edit as I recall.
In the summer of 80 Dave Mann was at the Indy shop Sport & Custom cycles. Sport & Custom was on India Street about 2 blocks south of San Diego HD. This area was redeveloped shortly after this, SD HD moved out to Sports Arena Blvd, and Sport & Custom closed. Part of the revitalization of downtown San Diego. It was a good move for the city but I was a fan of the old downtown. I was a sailor in San Diego from 72 to 86, and had a lot of wild fun downtown in the 70's and early 80's. This was when HD dealers were still mostly independent from the MoCo and it was a totally different vibe - but that's a conversation for another day.
Anyway I knew the owners well and got the heads up that Mann would be there - I don't remember why he was there after this many years. We grabbed the magazine, jumped on the bike, and went on down to the shop. JK said Hi and asked him if he would sign the picture - and he was very cool and signed it. We BS'd for while and went on our way.

Tony, you're so damned lucky to have scenery and hills like that to ride in and enjoy. Here in Florida, we have year-round riding, but it's like riding on a giant pool table with the roads dotted in with a big felt pen. I'd gladly give up a few months to be able to see some hills and things.
If my lucky lotto ticket comes in, your roads will have a very happy visitor. I'll be looking you up, too!
