Round Island is nice.. on the other side of Poole Harbour is...Poole! A wretched hive of scum and villainy, especially when the Quay is lined with Bikes on bike night!
The Gallant still docks with goods from Portugal
Puntgunning wildfowl must have been fun
Tis changed since my Great uncle's model J rattled the windows

Poole harbour was famous as a seaplane base- you could fly most anywhere in the world from there. It's the second biggest natural harbour in the world , and had three seaplane runways.
'Clare' stands ready in the 40's to run to America
BOAC used it until '48
It had all gone by the time I was born , the hulks of the Clippers were playgrounds
Then in '76 , Capt. Blair arrived with Southern Cross!
I spent every moment I could as a teen enjoying the scene, from the moment the Capt. left his digs i'd ride to the beach to watch her take off. His wife (Maureen O'Hara) rocked up in a Merc from Ireland that week too.
They're gone, but Southern Cross lives! Lovingly kept in a museum just along the coast, me and mine got to sit on the flight deck, myself in Captain Blair's seat , Red in Maureen's, in an act of ginger solidarity.
