70's and 80s were trash. 91-03 sportster is the most bullet proof motor harley ever put out. Best looking sportster however is pre 70.

Concur on late solid mount Sporties. 5-speed and alternator on crankshaft shit all over 4-speeds and the grenade alternator/clutch abortion.

Pretty sure the DRIVE TRAIN in a rubber mount is just as tough as an 03. They might be a little more of a pita to chop (exhaust is mounted to the engine, etc), but the DRIVE TRAIN (all your question addressed) is fucking bullet proof.

They need to be cause in order to do any kind of service work to em you gotta pull the motor and do a full tear down to spit the cases.... No trap-door anymore .. !!

    The Mo-Co reverted back to the 52-53 K's ....

I’ve seen no shortage of Grenaded trannies. And it’s a shit ton more labor to go through.

75-76 with the crossover shaft is the best shifter and transmission setup a motorcycle has ever had.

See the foot long gear shift and cable brake ... Sweet old Scoot ....

Reason it has the slammed look is, I raised the swingarm pivot up an inch on the frame...

I'd say the 91-04 are pretty bullet proof, rode one for a year every day only thing the failed was belt and shifter pawl. The shifter pawl could have been prevented by not listening to everyone saying "Sportsters are hard to shift." most of them aren't if that issue is fixed.

Gave mine to my dad so he could have a smaller bike to tinker with instead breaking out his ultra limited every time he just wanted to scoot down the road and back.

Cool because so many old bikers buy the biggest bloated fucking couch they can manage then don't ride them because they aren't really fun in town. Evo Sportsters are fun in town.
