Can you say "UPGRADE"
I have a few rebuilt S&S Super-B's that would be just the ticket for the Sportie ...

It's a runner, and a smoker.

Hi Christa! Black smoke or white? How long did it smoke for? I assume this is coming from the exhaust pipes..

Hey! It's real loud white smoke, haha. Exhaust pipes, with some coming from the front end from under the clamp. There was a tiny bit of oil in the bottom of the tank and the gas is old and filthy. Draining and refilling today, trying to see if it's something that kinda clears or if I need to do surgery. But hey, it runs! Took a dumb chance and all it took was some chem dip. Pretty exciting.

Wow, that is exciting , it's a neat bike. Glad you are changing the oil and putting fresh gas in. Be interesting to see if it clears when warmed up.

Thanks! Mostly it just made me want to get the pan running and hear its voice!
Hoping I don't have to put much more into this one. I want to practice on it and see how much of a chicken I am.

Those Bendix and Zenith clones work well enough on a stock engine so I'd be in no hurry to throw money at that bike until the Pan is finished. Any properly tuned common carb is ample for a stock engine, and any incorrectly tuned carb will be an asspain. Every project sucks time and money from every other project so best to focus money on target. Rebuild kits are cheap as are intake manifold seals which I replace every rebuild because they harden and tend to leak when the carb is disturbed. If it doesn't have a carb brace or filter brace I would install one as the intake manifold clamps are not intended for carb support, but they're cheap and simple enough to make your own.
A little smoke is harmless so long as blowby doesn't foul plugs, and a quick compression test will give you an idea of top end health.Last edited by farmall; 02-18-2021 at 5:57 PM.

Definitely not wanting to put too much into this! Those seals look like a good idea. What's a good brand for a kit?
Also, what weight oil should I be putting in it? Does it make a difference right now that I'm probably using it to clean/burn off whatever is in there?
Thanks!

Use 20/50. I'd wash the oil tank out with kerosene. New filter would be good too.

That motor should have orings for intake to head seals. A couple of bucks at any H-D familiar shop. Looks like you have the two-piece intake clamps. If they are the original cast brass pieces, they fit and work well. The modern knock-offs
of the same clamp are not too good.
Use 60 wt. in that old iron. 20W50 is NOT the oil for that motor.

I guess either way I'm getting orings, so it doesn't really matter, just curious.
