    Building a chopper

I’m finally getting to start in on this build I’ve had pictured in my head for a long time. It’s a tribute to my dads old shovel he had in the late 70s. Click image for larger version

That’s the only pic I have of his bike. Supposedly it’s somewhere in Oklahoma as somebody’s “someday my kids will want it or I’ll get to it, not for sale” deals. Next best option is to build a bike like it with my own twist. I went through a couple frames and front ends trying long ass springers and finally ended up with a good aftermarket frame and 16 over girder. Used some spare parts I had laying around and threw this together. Click image for larger version

Until I finally ran across a titled 74” shovelhead drivetrain and frame that has a stock rake.

Looks like the dude did everything right on this frame, now I’m gonna un do everything. It’s HD titled with STD cases and S&S top end, which doesn’t bother me as much as maybe it should? I plan on riding the shit out of this bike, so a set of aftermarket cases or something not “real harley from the factory” doesn’t bother me. After all, it’s my bike. A couple bikes I have been using to get details off of are Ben the boog on instagrams “the prismic boog” Click image for larger version

Which brings me to where I’m at right now. Started the tear down on the bike, kinda attached the front end for motivation as well as safe keeping, and here she sits. Click image for larger version

There may be minor breaks in the timeline, due to the fact that I kissed the pavement last week on my other bike and now have to rebuild parts of it in order to get my knees back out in the breeze. Click image for larger version

Also: I’m looking for roughly a 4 over narrow girder for my wrecked bike. Time for an update on it.

Yeah it’s the same bike. I don’t know why he tore it down, but In the end I got enough of what I needed to get my project rolling.

Dang and he had it built exactly like I would've too. Tins and frame color matched...classic bike.

I’m looking at my bikes, and realizing I should just switch the frame color and throw this green bike back together and rake my black bike out, because this bike is close to what my plan was for the black bike. Damn the luck. This thread may turn into “putting this green bike back together with a color change, and raking out my black shovelhead.”

Oil bag, trans, and a bunch of other bullshit out. Ordered up a fender, and 3.5 gallon tanks today. Going to go to the local bike shop that hoards all the chopper gold in the attic, and see if they have either an old Springer or a repop Springer with minor wear for this bike they’d be willing to let go of. Otherwise I’m gonna use the hydraulic front end off my wrecked bike until I can get a lead sled customs chromed Springer. All in all, my plan is to do the 60s thing on the green bike, and have a stroker motor for the long bike. Hoping to throw this first one together in the next two months or so. And then continue the long bike build.

Inspiration for this “changing horses midstream” idea.

This Wargasser chopper has similar style as the left one, love the stock rear fender shape that covers the sidewall of the tire.

I agree. I picked up a paughco rear fender that looks like it should give me that look. I’m hoping it gets here today or tomorrow, and I can kinda mock this thing up.

Gas tanks came in today. Waiting on the fender. Located a front end, and a couple star hub 21” wheels.. im hoping to have my mock up well on the way in the next 3 weeks.
