Was that a aftermarket or factory auto advance? If factory , where was it sticking when hot? Were you able to fix it? I ask because i have 2 pans 63&65 with factory auto advance. Was having a hell of a time getting the right counterweight return springs for them. The factory return springs were too weak. Was about to give up on them but found a local spring manufacturer that had some that work. The one on my 63 works flawlessly. The one on my 65 requires a little clutch to bring the idle down initially then settles to proper idle.
Panhead Hot Starting...Tattoo, Davestune, Dragstews halp I'm stumped

It was in a aftermarket timer. Hell it would stick every time no mater what I did....
But to your problem. I have a Cone head with points that does the very same thing.. A lot of times many factory timers by now have had different parts used in them and once you have weights that are worn to different studs they just bind up when they get hot... I bet I've changed them out 5 times since I have a bunch of OEM weights and I have just been able to get it to not stick once out of 20 times.... I figure it will stop it eventually.... I don't like aftermarket anything unless I have no other choice.... And it's not bad enough for me to worry about it...Comment

37-38deg 1 kick start
Hi
Your post was really interesting. Can yo explain in more detail about the 37-38 degree advance? Were you turning the breaker and what was the reference point? were you using the timing mark on the crank?
Thanx

I'm a bit late to the party, I've had no luck with auto timers, but mainly it is a wear issue. The end play needs to be right on the gear or it is going to move up and down resulting in inconsistent timing.
Both of the pans I have owned have been the same for starting, when hot I cannot touch the throttle just move the manual timer, turn on the key and kick. The '56 has become real consistent once I replaced the aftermarket auto-timer with a manual one I rebuilt to spec ( well that and Jesse did a killer job on my heads which were shit when he got them! )
Gents, correct me if I am wrong, but valves should be adjusted hot and should just spin with your fingers, yes?.Comment
