Alright update, got off work, swapped the carb from my ironhead (mikuni vm 38) and boom its running fine.

So fuck the S&S, im leaving the mikuni on. Ill looking into upping the main jet but it runs fine for now. ill post a video with the mikuni on.

goes to show you cant trust anyones "the carb was rebuilt" nonsense. The bike never ran right from the get go and the S&S clearly either had the idle air mixture screw turned in past seating and fucked the hole, or the butterfly valve was fucked and not resetting properly.

The bike idles fine, revs fine, and returns to idle fine now. Plus side, i have new intake seals that should be good to go for years now...

Swapped the tank out for shits and giggles, isnt painted yet but wanted to figure out where i was going to weld the bungs to mount it. The holes where the old tank was mounted were just slightly tapped holes drilled into the frame. Nice....

    EDIT:

    video of bike with mikuni

pics of said gas tank mounts:

My Sportster currently has its tank mounted the same way where it was drilled and tapped into the frame. I wish I could slap the previous owner for doing it half ass like that.

I like the tank mounted a little further back too.

tell me you didn't go the "paint everything you see flat black" route...

Not sure what all youre referring to here, but the gas tanks not really painted yet. Aside from that ive been replacing everything that was half assed on the bike in the first place.

ok. i just noticed that upper pictures show a completely different bike than the last ones you posted of it pretty much completely black. unless i missed something.

Here is the bike as i received it

                              Here it is now -

I've changed quite a few things, but the gas tank was swapped out, i still have it and did not paint over the flame paintjob. i wanna strip the paint off the lower fork legs too. sissy bar is a POS, slug welds and is actually rubbing the tire and actually had worn a groove in the 16" tire setup.

so while the bike was originally kind of blacked out, im going in the opposite direction on a lot of things. stuff like the carb air cleaner, points cover, legs, handlebars/risers, wheels are being changed to non black parts. im even going to try setting up a chrome wassell style fender on the rear.

my bad! definitely a cool ass bike.
