First off I'm a big fan and supporter of S&S.
Been istalling and running S&S hard parts successfuly for years.

      But here's my rant...
Just got a 117 TC crate motor in for a customer last week.
Gotta say I was not impressed with the sales staff knowledge of their own product...
Customer ordered a motor and a throttle body
No one told him he needed a specific manifold and air cleaner kit to fit the motor and throttle body he just ordered!
And an oil line kit to fit the dyna tank!!
I caught the little grey note at the bottom of the catalog page about the oil lines, but we are now waiting on the manifold...
You would think the sales staff would be looking for that upsell !
Plus customer's wife is wondering why I gotta order 400 dollars worth of parts to make this thing run lol
Had to physically demonstrate so she would understand "big part don't fit little hole".
Had to restrain myself from making a joke about Lube.

Furthermore the oil line setup for late model Dynas seems way over engineered.
Stock oil lines are two rubber elbows and four nipples...
This thing took three hours to install! And it should have come with an oil pan gasket, just saying.
I'm betting the lines are gonna leak in short order.
And worse yet there is a potential leak in the uphill feed line! Hoping it won't start sucking air.
      We shall see...

And Tattoo, I agree these crate motors should come with a real manual. Not just installation instructions.

Thanks for that...... It's not just S$S it's almost every manufacturer..... I have a odd grid solar system on my cabin and nothing that I bought had a manual that told you anything helpful..... And then you call there tech line and ask questions and they don't know shit and it sounds like they are reading off of a piece of paper to answer your questions....... I don't see how you can run a business like that...

Wow takin a $2000 dollar hit to fix a "new" motor.......so sad. I know dave likes to bend over and take it deep, but FINANCIALLY as well??? Thats crazy I'd be all over S&S....maybe you'll get a shirt or a Koozee at least...

Seems S&S has followed the corporate model of hiring some "order takers" instead of knowledgable sales people who know their shit. Save a few payroll $$ but look at the result that poor dave is experiencing....

My crate motor ate an oil pump that they replaced under warranty but was told to take a hike when my compression releases literally fell out......still happy with motor leaving weaker riders in the dust...

Dave when it's back together let me break it in...please I'll be gentle....I swear

                    A story ....

At the time I was working for "Biker's Dream" in Daytona on Beach Street.
We sold most all of the clone Harley Customs..
Fella comes into the shop and buys one of the 750 "Billy" bikes that (At that time) CMC was building...

                    It had a 96" S&S Super Stock engine ...

The Chap rode it all the time, he was a local Boy and would stop by the shop every now and again for us to do the service...
He did have a small problem with a oil leak, wasn't a huge leak but was enough of one to be a nuisance...
It was around the oil pump.. No problem we thought, install some new gaskets should take care of it...

                    Nope .... It still had the leak ... !!! ... Bummer WTF ... ??
Ok.. Got with S&S and Pow-Wow about what to do...
They sent us a new oil pump, install it and put down a few miles on a test ride ....
Well Sir .... The leak was still there...

Now it was time to get out the "Tom Terrific Hat"

What I did was to get a Kit off the Snap-On truck that had a dye and a black light to locate the leak...
And it worked super well, found it ....

The case casting had a bubble in it and was weeping oil right behind the pump ....
Al-right, got on the horn to S&S and told them our findings ...
They said to pull the motor and send it to them and they would change out the case...
Got with the owner to tell him what the game plan was...
He asked about the time it would take to do this, we told him about 6 to 8 weeks...

He didn't like hearing that, he wanted to ride.
I told him there was another fix that would most likely cure the oil leak and would get him back in the saddle within a days time..
Being the casting flaw was behind the pump on the breather wall of the case, I suggested grinding down the case a bit for JB Weld to bond to...
He like that idea and said to go for it...

I did the work, 20 mile test ride .... "No Leak"
                    Happy Camper ... !!
The last time I seen that Chap and his bike it had over 16,000 miles on it and was ticking like a .....
