Shovelhead top end rebuild help

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out I have a 1980 fxs and need to replace the head gaskets getting some oil seepage and blow by his do I tell if I need to get new cylinders and piston and also if I get stock 80 inch piston and cylinders do I have to do anything to my original heads other then make sure flat and internals are ok ?

If I go with new stock cylinders and pistons my heads are ok size wise as long as they are flat correct ?

Don't know. I have swapped to 80 inch heads on 74 inch cylinders on a 1200 cc earlier nose cone engine. Not enough detail in your answer. < Pics? >

I was building a lower comprehension motor for easier kick only starting. Working good still for years .

Could always do a squiish test before final assembly I guess. Or use

As long as you're in speck with the wall fit (For given piston) and the out of round/tapper also falls in spec... Be good to go...
Keep in mind that the 80" cylinders are good up to a 0.030" overbore (Pistons are available in a 0.040" over, but the jugs really get thin at that bore.)

All three castings of the Shovel's heads will interchange...
Might want to let a shop freshen up the heads ...

Dang, if I would get the next size up from what bore it's at now ...

Your pistons looks to be cast Oem ...
Could get a set of Wiseco's .. They cost a bit more than the cast but money well spent....

Why not just bore the ones you have now??

Theres no way to tell about those cylinders without putting a bore gage to them.man no offense or disrespect meant but judging from your questions sounds like you are in over your head.save yourself lots of grief and money and take that motor to someone that knows what they are doing.good luck

The pistons you would get from S&S are made by Wiseco ....
On your jugs:
What I was trying to say is to do what's called a clean-up bore, that is going 0.010" over from the bore your at.. (If your bore is at .030" now, may be best to get another set )

Coffin head, if you clean up the top of the piston they should be stamped with a size?

I may have the solution to this dilemma ...

In the classifieds I have a pristine set of 80" jugs that are at Std bore..
Been for sale for quite a while ...

What I could do is an exchange for your jugs "IF" they are also in good shape with no broken fins or out to max bore...

I can take my jugs out to .010" and fit new Pistons of your choice ...
If interested in doing this deal, PM me and we'll talk Turkey ...

I don't think anyone has said it yet... But even if you buy a new set of jugs you will still have to have them checked to the size of the new pistons..... It's not just plug and play if that's what your trying to get around..........

Wiseco's fit up close at .003" ... Oem cast is .001"
Not all requires the same wall fit...

I see you live in Canada .... Surely there is a shop close to you that can do a wiz-bang job with fitting oversize pistons ....
But first you gotta know the size of what ya got ... You don't wanta be packing a set of .030" over jugs down to the shop and then they tell ya to take those home and make doorstops out of em ...

Can't he just invest in those LA tubes, liners and have those pressed in? I know that is only slightly more expensive than a set of moco new old stock ones...ha h a h a
