    Ironhead Cam Cover Bushing Replacement

This has seen some run time ...

When I pulled it off the motor the pinion bushing fell off...
Was chromed at one time in it's life.
Platers did a poor job of protecting the bushings from flash plating and they got a dose of chrome...
I striped the chrome and intend to powdercoat the cover... A few places will need Lab-Metal for a nice finish..

Ordered a bushing kit from Eastern M/C that comes with all the parts, even the Torrington bearings and dogbones was in the kit..
Being the Oem pinion bushing was so loose in the cover most likely it had been spinning, so I went ahead and got a .005" oversize in order to do a custom fit ....
Glad I did cause the new Eastern Oem size fell right in the bore....

Interesting! I'm looking forward to learning how much interference you prefer.

      At least .001"
But .... Being I heat the cover to 250 F and freeze the bushings using Co2 can go a bit more than that ...

A tad of Kean & Prime some Loctite 609 heat and freeze and they be in.
For a bit more of keeping them there is the dowel pins ...

Time to line ream them to size....
Cain't wait to load the cams in the cover and do the checks for lash...
Run up on a set of OG Sifton 202 Hustler cams for this build....

They sit in the bushings now, but are a bit tight ...
By the time the reams does their jobs, should be honky-dory ...

Nice to see someone else loves CO2. It's insanely handy.

I put a brass air chuck on a fixed pressure 200psi Western regulator (and have them on a couple of "balloon filler" regulators at lower psi ratings) for seating tires, filling them in the field, and running my impact wrench on stubborn hardware. A long hose gives the CO2 time to gasify. I collect industrial gas cylinders including small "kegerator" size CO2. Beats spending retarded money on a fancy Power Tank.

Smaller CO2 vapor withdrawal cylinders double as fire extinguishers if you invert them for liquid withdrawal. (For those not familiar, CO2 stores as a liquid so cylinders hold much more quantity than the same sized compressed gas cylinder.)

Of course for freezing parts a regulator is an obstacle. The nipple, fitting and nozzle Dragstews uses is best for that. Nipples, crush washers (get a package, they get lost!) and nuts are cheap online or at your local welding supply.

That set up is called "Minnesota Snow Blower" the Co2 tank must have the tube in it ....

That makes it liquid withdrawal so a vapor withdrawal tubeless tank would need to be upside down, of course not practical for large cylinders. Most local welding suppliers will swap tubeless for tubed CO2 cylinders of the same size at no extra cost.

I searched "Minnesota Snow Blower" etc with no joy.

This nipple, nut and washer will fit:

After that the plumbing is up to the user. If you buy brass fittings I'd make sure they are Western or other high pressure rated. You can get stainless high pressure hoses (nipple end is 1/4" NPT) from Western if wanted.

              Happy freezing.

Bushings are line reamed to size, cams spin good, no lash on any gear mesh ...
Now to work the cover for the powdercoat .....

Going with the cast look on the cam, sprocket, rocker boxes and primary cover..
Will be shooting the case with black powder....

Installing "R" valves takes a bit of time to do ... Lot of port and bowl work to get them puppys in there....

                          Now for the Lab-Metal ....

Maga sanding going down using the filler for hiding dents/bubbles .... But for a new looking cover after the powder is laid on, gotta do it...

Lab-Metal needs to air dry for a day then a bake for an hour at 200 F ...

After that goes down can sand it, might need another coat of Lab-Metal, really depends on how well it sands out ...

Case had some real bad areas that got filled with Lab-Metal....
