This is the only picture I have on me at the moment. I can get a better one tonight after work along with the nut I'm trying to use. The top tree I'm using looks like it's supposed to clamp around the stem and then the nut goes on top of it. Its about an inch and a half thick so the stem is only coming up about halfway into it.

I cant say for certain, but on my 33.4 mm fork build i had to switch over to a fork stem cap nut rather than the sportster threaded sleeve and outer threaded nut style. So when you assemble the triple tree the stem cap nut is resting on top of the top tree and is threaded onto the fork stem.

For example, here is a sportster fork assembly. Notice the part 21 that threads over the fork stem, and the part 22 threads into 21 and sits on top of the top tree -

Here is an example of a big twin fork assembly from an fxs -

Notice there is no sleeve for the fork stem cap nut (26) to thread into.

I should note that when assembling my triple trees it was kind of a bitch to get together, a juggling act of sorts and threading that fork stem nut onto the v twin cast tree was a fucking bitch because the hole in the top tree is large enough to press the stem cap nut into but not large enough to easily thread it. so with pressure and patience you can get the triple tree assembled. The fork stem cap nut goes into the top tree and threads onto the fork stem. Its a bit different process than the sportster.

A small flap wheel could smoothly enlarge the hole in the tree. I'd use 60 or 80 grit and go slow with many test fits. You can use a thick Sharpie to dye when checking for high spots.

So were you able to still use your sportster upper tree and just change the cap nut to match the Vtwin lower tree?

Thats what I did, like i said the cap nut was a tough fit but i just used some colony stem cap nut off ebay. Check this out :

part # for sportster upper bracket:

part # for fx (big twin) upper bracket:

The stem nut is cheaper than a whole upper tree so i would start there. Here is the one I used off ebay

this worked for me and i know this because i have ridden it assembled and did not die, http://i.imgur.com/Ei7RYBz.jpg

                Appreciate all the help guys.

You were correct, I did not have the right cap nut. Was still trying to use the sportster hardware. Once I got the right nut for the Vtwin trees it all went together correctly.

I hadn't thought about the neck cups as being the problem though. I didn't realize that there were different types of neck cups for Big Twin necks.
yep big twin has 1 inch and sporties are 5/8. go to oldstf cycle and get a neck cup conversion kit
