Outer main bearing installation 1988 Sporty

    Hello everyone~

First off this is my first time posting so bear with me. I have a 1988 1200 sportster that has a shot outer main bearing. It sits right behind the front main sprocket on the primary side of the motor.

Question 1. Can it be installed with out splitting the cases? (Outer bearing only) Inner looks fine

Question 2. Will a mid 90s 5 speed sportster motor line up with the 1988 frame?

    Any help would be grateful.

    Thank you!

Four days gone by with no answers ... ???

I'm going to throw one out ...

That bearing is sold as a match set...
By being a match set means it has two Timken bearing with a spacers in between the two to give it .001-.003 free-play..

If you do manage to remove the outer bearing (It's pressed onto the shaft) and replace it with another, that .001-.003 might not be there..????

Be a guess on how the bearing will be sitting in the bearing cup race...

If I was doing the job... The case would be took apart and a new bearing assembly (Match Set) would be installed..

    VT No: 12-0431
    OEM No: 24729-74
V-twin left crankcase main bearing set is factory assembled with correct spacer for proper end play.
    Sold as a pair.
    Fits: XL 1977-2003

    FWIW
I will be doing a 84 Ironhead replacement of that bearing today..
If you would like to see photos of how that bearing is removed and installed, can take a few photos and post em up here on your thread...

                Just kidding Guys .....

He's been employed with the Dept of Energy for well over 20 years...
                So far so good ....

My Dad had a hand in the birth of Nuke plants .... At that point in the time line it was called the "The Atomic Energy Commission" ...
                Late 40's and 50's .....

He received his Mechanical Engineering Degree (B.S.M.E. in 1924) and built Nukes in Birmingham, AL, Fontana, CA, Provo, UT., Idaho Falls, ID., Pontiac, MI., Waverly, OH., Paducah, KY.

I think they have perfected the use of Nuclear energy by now ... We do have a concern about the waste ....
Can't be dumping that shit in the Ocean or sticking it inside a Mountain in Nevada might not be the best of ideas either....

Been talk about shooting it into outer space.... Our new dumping grounds ...
Sound to me that would be a good way to piss off ET...

Might be a little late with that.... ???

                  Just listen to Stew IMO.

Or... get another motor for 500-1000 dollars and slowly & peacefully rebuild that motor in the meantime the correct way... and shotgun a fuckton of cool guy parts at it.
