    Ironhead kickstart question

So im installing a kickstarter on my bike, i ran into an issue installing it. The v twin kit kicker ratchet gear that meshes on the back of the clutch plate included a bushing that proved to be too long.

Basically, the v twin kit provided clutch ratchet plate would allow the extra bushing space to fit, and the kicker ratchet gear and the clutch ratchet plate would mesh properly. HOWEVER, I intend to use an OEM clutch hub with an already attached ratchet plate and therefore the bushing and v twin ratchet gear will not work.

I came to this conclusion after assembling the whole primary and finding that the kicker was not engaging my clutch. The spacer / bushing were not allowing the kicker ratchet gear to fully engage.

So I have ordered more OEM replacement parts to try to sort out this fitment issue. More $$$ into this project....

My question is regarding the kickstart function to help my fundamental understanding of how it works and how to fix this issue.

    Okay here goes:

If the kicker ratchet gear needs to engage with the clutch hub to turn the primary drive and start the motor, how does the ratchet gear disengage when the clutch hub is spinning thousands of rotations per minute??

I really dont understand how the ratchet gear is supposed to disengage from the clutch ratchet plate, or how the teeth of the ratchet gear are supposed to disconnect and reconnect from the kicker arm gear? Wouldnt the first time I start this bike up, the whole assembly tear itself apart? Am I missing something? Can someone explain this better to me?

    Thanks!

    Here's a few pics:

This bushing can be lowered, but then it displaces the transmission shaft spacer and the kicker ratchet gear has no room to move into the recess of the kicker arm gear to stop its motion.

I have run into the same problem with dat V-T part...

My cure for it was to trim it down in a lathe ...

Dragstrews, youre referring to the bushing? Ive ordered a new bushing that hopefully is shorter, if not ill cut it down. I also ordered a shorter spacer thats could resolve the issue as well.

            Yes the bushing was trimmed...

Careful with changing out the spacer.... It will throw off the chain alignment some ....

Got an OEM ratchet gear, is the bushing supposed to extend like this?

                Yes....

Do a test fit to the clutch drum.... Make sure that the teeth fully engage...

They arent, heres a pic -

seems like the bushing is just large enough to cause interference. Pretty sure i dont need to try to hammer it in there, i need it to freely disengage. thats the oem clutch basket ratchet plate.

heres the v twin ratchet plate on an oem clutch basket -

if you cant tell by now, im really trying to avoid going through the process of riveting the v twin plate to the clutch basket. i dont know where to begin with that. dont even know if a shop around here would be willing to help out.

To help in doing that job .... V-T has a tool that locates and holds the plate to the drum...

I have one and it does it's job really well...

                            Well ..... I didn't say it was cheap ....

Think I would be using the V-T Plate.... Look at how high the teeth are compared to the used Oem one...
You really don't want those teeth to let go in the middle of a kick .... Trust me on this.... It comes with a boat load of pain ... !!!

i agree that the v twin thing would be great and i could avoid this whole thing and have my clutch back together in literally 30 minutes, i guess i just dont understand why im having fitment issues with oem parts.
