I had a buddy at a glass shop give me a huge piece of 1/2'' thick glass that I do figure 8's on with 400 until its flat. then used a little anaerobic sealant and they were oil tight for years. I never used any kind of ring either. I was quite pleased with how well they sealed despite it leaking from everywhere else.
i just had my friend do a full motor rebuild it and he thinks the thick cardboard style gasket is the ticket.... once they swell with oil. I've re-torqued the lids 20 plus times, and they're almost to the point where they're not taking any more torque, and they're sealing quite well.
Indianhead Shellac, is that like a yamabond kind of stuff? I've heard of it but never seen it.
