How do I get raked cups perfectly straight?

Anybody got a method for this? How do I get the cups absolutely straight and lined up? I know the cups have a mark on them but how do I find the perfect center on the neck?

      But seriously.
I've used a rod and string. Mark the frame with a punch.
They always seem to loosen up and move around on their own eventually. So I spot welded the last set.

That's scary. Yall may not know the answer to this question, but I have a Ness hardhead frame. Do I still use bearing cups or just bearings in races? Cups look like they take up too much length of the neck for my old springer to fit.

          Pics would help.
That ness frame may have the cups machined in Neck cups would fit into like, a much smaller hole than races.
          Cups hold the races.
From the center out; stem s, inner-caged-tapered-bearing, bearing race, neck cup, neck.
Unless your talking older loose ball bearing stuff. But i think not.

I got a Timken conversion kit from Vulcan. I don't know how to post pics on here. Pretty sure the Ness neck is same size as stock ironhead though.

Well shit. The Vulcan kit, and standard ironhead bearing cups are way to big to fit in this ness hardhead frame. Anybody got any ideas what bearing, cup combo I should use? I figured that these hardheads were all one size and was hoping I'd find somebody that's worked with one.

So you're hinting that it's a "standard" Arlen Ness custom "hardhead" frame for an Ironhead? What year(s)?

I think you are trying to install cups into cups...
Pull those ball bearing races out of the neck cups. Replace them with the conversion tapered (timken) races.
Invest in a cheap mic so you can get a real measurement.
Get a side shot so we can see if the cups are indeed one with the neck.
