Default Difference xl900 and xl1000 cams

I am building a 45 magnum engine and I have read that it is best to use 900cc Ironhead cams. I found a pair but the owner does not know that they are 900cc ore 1000cc xl cams.
    Does anybody know the difference?

I know the 1000cc cams need more machining to use in the wl bottem end.

Cilinders that I am using are from a 900.

It shouldn't matter. My 'What Fits What' book says you can use any 900 or 1000 cams in any other Ironhead, it just says not to mix cams from different sets, i.e. p, pb, q etc.

As far as different lift and duration of different Ironhead cams and how they work or don't work in the Flattie bottom end, I don't know. Good luck.

You need the 57-70 sportster cams.

In 1971 the sportster breaker plate moved to the end of the #2 cam much like a cone shovel. Earlier sportsters had a timer like the 45, and a helical gear on the end of the #2 cam.

A cam set that looks like this is what you are looking for:

Ah, that's why you need those, for the mag drive gear. Good to know.

Don't know about the rest of the Boys here, but I would love to see photos of your motor build...
