Thought I'd share an update for this, during assembly i realized my oil tank doesnt have enough room to mount after the engine is mounted....so ill be pulling either the engine and doing another teardown or ill be pulling the rear head.....probably pulling the engine this weekend again though..
i need a new chain, a proper electrics box / battery box / im gonna go with different exhaust. final stretch maybe?Last edited by FatChibs; 02-28-2017, 7:42 AM.Comment

So I ran into clearance issues like i mentioned before, lifted the bike, unmounted the motor, wiggled it about, fit the oil tank in. Bolted the motor back up, and im calling it a night. the fit is pretty damn close... nothing rubbing though. exhaust has room. starter solenoid has room. whew.... ill get better pics of the oil tank but its as narrow as the frame and doesnt stick out at all. side note, i dont have anything in place to mount the bottom of the seat. the seat seems like it may be temporary in the long run so im gonna just strap it down when it comes time to ride until i decide to do something permanent.

working on it some more, converted to right side shift, i have been working on installing the kicker but the vtwin rachet gear doesnt work with a stock clutch ratchet plate, so im working through that. good news is ive learned how to quickly disassemble and reassemble the clutch multiple times.....left side brake parts are coming in. working slowly on wiring with solder, heat shrink, cloth covered wiring. Heres some pics:

I was pleased to find the tranny in what appears to be great condition, the inside of my primary is really clean, and the right side shift goes thru the gears well. Went with some shotgun exhaust ive mounted up just for mock up til i mount em proper.
the bushing in for the main shaft kicker ratchet is too long, and its not meshing with the clutch basket ratchet. ordering some OEM stuff to replace the vtwin kit stuff. I dont think id recommend the vtwin conversion kit, id rather have bought everything separate the first time and avoided bullshit fitment issues. Anyone wondering about installing a kicker on an ironhead should know that the process is actually very easy with the right tools and parts, it seemed daunting at first to tear into the primary but its actually really straightforward. I bought a whole primary tool kit from ebay for a good price, lots of people make their own but this was how i went about it.
im also going to test out a 19 tooth front sprocket. i dont do much highway riding, so i like the idea of more low end power and torque.

Is that Ironhead transmission tool kit from ebay?
I used that same kit when I tore into my 79 Sporty. Kit was a lifesaverComment

Man Nice bike!
Did you do neck bearings yet?
I need to do mine.. Trying to decide if I should go stock or timken.Comment

Yeah, the neck and forks were a little tricky with the paughco frame.
Lower fork and stem are 1", basically a bigtwin neck for FX : 1971–1972. So I got paughco neck cups and timken bearings for 1" stem. I would ditch the stock ball bearings, they suck and are a pain in the ass to install.Comment
