panhead flywheel shaft end play

i am rebuilding my 60 panhead motor and the flywheel pinion shaft has some end play. when the gear cover is on with a gasket, the big nut on the flywheel scrapes the inside of the case. if i assemble it without the gasket, everything spins fine. are there shims for the pimion shaft that i am missing? i cannot find any reference to them in any parts books. im thinking of just sealing it up without the gasket if i cannot find the shims. any suggestions would be helpful?
