Default Amazing drop in peneration 300 Win Mag

So just off topic here. I was shooting my new Mossberg Patriot 300 win mag yesterday and shot a spinner target from 100 yrds and again at about 30 yrds. I was surprosed to see that it would not penetrate at 100yrds and cut through like butter at 30yrd.

The 300 Win Mag is a very powerful round which can reach out to a mile or more. It was a VERY light bullet at 150gr however and maybe that's he culprit.

If you love paying $60 a box :-) Started reloading last night for the first time. Doing 180gr something to start with.

Always stuck with my 308. Great ammo variety...especially if u handload. Much cheaper and I've taken plenty of deer and two bear with it. Never needed to shoot past 800 yards, and that was just for fun. Not bagging on your 300 wm at all, its a heck of a cartridge, you could load the same 30-06 AP projectiles I load in my 308....that should punch thru whatever is pissing you off. Anyway...don't spinner targets spin....hahaha

The 100 yard shot was done when the spinner was mounted on the provided pivot, right?

The 30 yard shot was done on the spinner that was set into the dirt, right?

If this is correct, then the answer is more than likely that the spinner correctly configured (via movement) "absorbed" a much higher force of impact because it was not stationary.

At 30 yards, not only is the velocity greater, the target was not allowed to "get out of the way" so to speak. Thus, way more energy was retained on impact. It appeared you placed the damaged target into the dirt, and it was backed up to a degree.

Muzzle velocity difference was probably only 200 FPS max (if muzzle is around 3200, with a BC of 0.43).

    Just a guess.

The spinner was shot off. The impact broke it off the spinner bar. I'm going to go back and use the 180gr at 100yrds on the same target next time I go and we'll see. You could be right.

My sporty Doc, is pretty darn fast. If I could ride and shoot at the same time I'd give it a shot and see who is faster.

you could just shoot yourself and try to outrun the bullet on your sporty.

He's gonna make a video where he shoots the gun at a target at 1000 yards, gets on and starts his sporty, rides to the target, and takes a picture of the shot hitting the target.yes, his sporty is THAT fast
