Default What does the chopper mean to you?

Sometimes I dig deep and try to articulate exactly what a "chopper" even means. I didn't grow up with bikes, the closest experience to bike culture I had was my Portuguese uncle Manny firing up his Harley (I still to this day have now idea what it was) cruiser when I was a kid and being blown away by the thunder. For some odd reason I have an idea of what a "perfect" bike is made up in my mind and getting there is some kind of summit I have to reach, I need resources to afford it, knowledge to pull it off, and style to certify its legitimacy. I stumbled across the movie Wild Angels in this little journey and there is something about Fonda's pan in that flick that blows me away, I watch the beginning from time to time, but not too often, much like keeping a favorite song sacred by not overplaying it. There is a demonstration of what freedom is in the fullest sense with that bike, almost a lightning bolt of superhumaness that Nietzsche ranted about more than a hundred years ago, an expression that lies beyond words, it WAS. You know you are hooked when you stop caring what peoples reactions are banging gears down the road, when you spend hours on end staring at a dead machine in a shop realizing you are looking at part of yourself. I hate the word art and all the implications involved with its crippling generalizations but in my eyes I cannot think of a better word for a properly done chopper, it is an art. A chop is a transcending act, a living testament to overcoming the fact a man will end, an expression of what a man is willing to do to show an indifferent world what the fuck he is all about. So if you are sitting there bummed as hell, cause shit ain’t right, cause the job sucks or the world is nonsense, or you have realized that being a mere dot in a sea of 8billion sucks, imagine that bike in your mind and share it with us cause that is what it is all about.

Can't say just one solid image. More just the feeling of being gone, taking that trip that really leads to nowhere but loving every moment. The feeling of problems and anger and sorrow and bills falling away mile by mile until it's just you and the sky trying forever to reach out to one another. Boogieing down the road with your favorite riding buddy, that shadow bro on the road beside you. The hot patches and cold spots the smell of honeysuckle followed by roadkill. Watching clouds form on the horizon and wondering who's gonna win the race you or nature. Fireflys splattered on your glasses in glowing specks, face full of road grime, the smell of gas and oil and tar.
This is what chopper means to me.

I think of just riding my bike that I BUILT. Seeing and smelling the road. The noise of un-baffled open pipes winding up, dead bugs on your goggles as you spit its mate outta your mouth from the huge assed smile on your face.
Your favorite road on a Sunday morning. In the sun and no one else around.

    I don't have a multi paragraph answer.
to me it's about taking a perfectly running complete bike and making it a death trap that is still pretty.

Well.. i grew up riding on the tank of my old mans 50's 2stroke, which was the only bike he could affors when bringing us lot up, also went to a lot of rod and chopper meets with him as a kid in the 80's. Plus sweden is fucking brimming with old school choppers, triumphs, harleys, japs, you name it.
I remember staring at some red candy flake triumph chop around 5-6 years old thinking this is fucking it.
So i guess im born into this moneysucking hellhole.

Man Fuck the scene, this is purely introspective.
I'm always the hippest guy on the scene in my head, I love there sometimes too so it's pretty cool that everyone else in my head thinks I'm radical, except that one guy............But he's a dick so Fuck him.

Building the bike you want, to appease yourself. Not giving a shit if it's what's cool or trendy at the time. Simple, quick and clean. Plus one off parts and doing things yourself make it better.

I ride an ironhead, but I like any bike, If you built it and you like it cheers man that's what it's about. It bugs me when people look down on guys riding cool jap or british bikes just because they're not a fucking Harley...
