Cool new to ironheads. need case information.

I just got an 81 ironhead at a good price. The right side case is destroyed from a tranny gear exploding. My question is... what year cases will work with my left side case? I haven't stripped the motor down yet but welding isn't going to be an option. I got 2 swap meets coming up and I need to get educated before I start looking. Any info would be great and thanks in advance.

You would be surprised at how much of that case can be repaired with welding.

The transmission blowout is common enough that there is a replacement corner available for welding in:

I have an 80 and an 81, I'm pretty sure the right side is the same. They have different accessories, but cases appear the same.

If you'd like I have a factory parts manual I can check tomorrow to see what the part numbers are. See if they're is anything obviously different, my 81 cases are already apart, it crank walked and toasted the rod bearing.

Ok quick check in my old manual these are all Harley part numbers
    24490-79 fits 79&80 xls
    24527-75B fits 79&80 xl, xlch
24527-81C fits 81 and on xl

So from what I'm seeing basically anything 81 and on should work. A 79 or 80 might work I can't say for sure. Hope that helps.

Being a machinist with good welder friends I'm probably gonna try the weld on section. I was nervous cause I couldn't make heads or tails of the piece from the pic but that pic with the cutout next to the motor solves my doubts. Exactly what I need.
