    Default Ironhead neck bearings

This has probably been covered numerous times already but still new to all this and trying to decipher all the info I see. Anyhow I'm swapping a 73 ironhead to a rigid frame it came with and the neck bearings were in rough shape and just wanna know if I can just buy timken bearings with the existing cups? I'd like to keep same front end so I don't see need to go to the 1" upgrade. Not sure what all involved if i do. Thanks

Unless I'm mistaken, you can measure the outside diameter of the steering stem and the inside diameter of the bearing cup and you can order the bearings and races to fit. I've used heat to expand the bearing and cold to "shrink" bearing race before pressing them into place. By heat, I mean I've used propane or map gas torches and for cold I've heard of people using a freezer, but I've used salted ice water. The "salt" makes the water colder.
