I don't care about "scenes" or hipsters. I just like cool bikes. If you ride and wrench on your own stuff, you are fine by me.

I'm into motorbikes because I like motorbikes. Got my first one 27 years ago. I don't have to prove anything to anybody. I don't get all the too cool for school attitudes, or the tough guy attitudes, or the put downs because somebody is different than you. Everything cool gets fucked up. You younger dudes will learn that with time.

Yeah, I can see how it must get a bit confusing; waking up every day, looking in the mirror, and having to give yourself a good ass-kicking just to make sure you're OG.
    A couple thoughts:
    1. never underestimate the ability of people in a scene to assume that scene's universal originality and importance to rest of the world.
    2. Its pretty funny to hear about the presence, saturation, and passing of something as inherently self-referential as customizing motorcycles, wherein styles, techniques, technology, and vocabulary have been endlessly swapped from an ongoing shared parts bin for 80+ years. Especially when you hear about it from a 23(?) year old kid covered in tattoos from the '50's. Its kinda like if some scrawny little rich white kid who had stolen all of Muddy Waters riffs' and played his music into the ground turned around and told this 70 year old bluesman, "Mud, these little white kids out there stealing your riffs; fuck those posers, am I right? Oh, and this blues scene is dead, man".
"THE FUCK YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BLUES, YOU CRACKERASS LITTLE SHIT?!"
    3. While I dig some of the same aesthetics as a lot of the guys on here, the word "scene" is fucking anathema. It has fuck-all to do with the choices I make.
    4. "...an air of danger and mystery" also has, coincidentally, nothing to do l with why i build and ride. Actually, it sounds like a blog for Darkwing Duck.

This crap reminds me of the early music scene before it was labeled "scene."
Exactly, it is a scene whether anyone likes it or not. I had just as much skate history as riding scoot history until I got super old and fat with a fucked up body.

    Cheers!

    But on the thread topic...
I like to keep my corner of the "scene" punk, just because that's a big part of who I am since 1979 til death. Not gonna define punk as anyone that knows, as Rubsy said real recognizes real and it's beyond labels, labels sell shit that's why I have a touch of goth, fuck labels be yourself and mourn what society has become, but not get all ouch my pussy but anonymously take it back with good old fashioned subversion to fight the propaganda telling/dictating you how to live your life. It is yours after all... so take that shit and live how you want, by whatever "label" you're most at home in or a conglomerate and never mind the status quo.

Of course, we do have to survive in this shit unless we wanna be a full on leech sucking teet, nothing wrong with that as do they owe us a living? of course they fucking do, generations of slave to graves biting the shit sandwich. So real to me in this scene selling is like a self published label... not trying to get rich, just support your ass to keep living your passions, and anything extra is used for partying with friends, or supporting a family because oops responsibility.

I never thought I was building/chopping/customizing bikes, just polishing a turd with more shit. Taking the sedate style pushed to the masses, and murdering it to fit my own idea of style just for me.

Anyone else that does this does knows what I'm talking about, and well we are the "hard to reach" demographic in metrics, the ghost in the machine because fuck your commercialism, make something worth a shit that doesn't suppress people but give them a decent wage, and it's inexpensive enough or built well enough for the common man/woman/child to afford then that will get you business. Not fancy jingles and hyped up bullshit you can't escape always in your face, and well corporate America, some cats are tired of you being in their face without welcome, and don't mind popping you in the lip and saying back up and back off, this is our slice, our deal, and you can never own it... because mother fuckers we are FREE.

anyhoo, I'm burnt on this kinda shit after decades of it... but it is what it is, so zipping it up and slowly walking away eyes staring at the side walk lines. If I at some point make an indy label hate on me all you want, and kick my ass if I look up and let em shine. All that glitters aint gold.

All I know is I rarely ever even think about fighting anymore, I don't know all the cool chopper kids or many people who ride for that matter. I spend most of my time with my family, ride of my motorcycles pretty much every day year round, work on bikes with my kids most days and motorcycles are probably the biggest factor in my whole families life.

But like I said, I'm really past fighting these days, I just want to ride and play with my kids. I'm okay with "not being real" or whatever...

Sorry I didn't get out to see you on the planned trip out to Hazzard, I'm a shitty friend and forgot to notify you. Last minute my mom spazzed and begged me not to go, mothers intuition I guess. But I didn't want her suffering just because I wanted to have fun. You have made a good slice for yourself, happy to see it... chew slowly and relish those moments.

Here's what I think haha... I've only been riding a motorcycle for a few years, but the dick measuring contest is exactly the same in any kind of enthusiast group. Anything people are passionate about I mean. Think about any group of enthusiasts...fishermen, auto racers, musicians etc. They're all bashing on one another within the circles they run. They all want to be identified as "the real deal" or the best at whatever. And they will go to some extreme lengths to prove it. I got into riding because its fuckin cheap as shit if you're a gearhead. Plus its more fun than a greased up midget. It doesn't have to be anything more than that for me.

I like many others progressed into Harley's from riding BMX and dirt bikes. Growing up my grandfather use to race triumphs on the dirt tracks in the 50's. My father was a desert racer and owned a harley. I just grew into it.

That seemed off point like many story's but I see no point in complaint about the "scene". Like many have already said. It happens in every "scene" things become trend and it'll just take time to weed out those who are here for the long run and those who are just hopping on the next "cool " thing.

Look how things went with the whole West Coast Choppers and OCC thing. Now everyone's going to the whole blacked out "Club style" look and we know what to blame all that on. It'll all pass and we can keep partying on and riding.

Who cares what you wear, what you ride or who you know. Knees to the breeze and hair in the wind.

And rollerblading still gay..... Unless your playing roller hockey.

    nuklhd nailed it.

In most of the country no one even knows there is a chopper "scene" because the scene is elsewhere or invisible and so are hipsters.

I get what your saying, bike owners are so diluted with those people that buy a bike and ride it a handful of times a year. And when I ride on the weekends I see all the "weekend warriors" down from miami. Yuppies for sure. I will not even go into a harley dealer anymore that company is a joke these days, nothing more than a bass pro shop, or walmart, of motorcycles. And people think they are kewl when they go to the harley dealer and buy "Genuine" harley gear and show off to there other yuppy friends. Even the clubs crack me up any more, 80-90 percent are a joke.

I never saw the post everyone keeps mentioning, but when I asked him about his born free bike today, the only thing he said is that "he wants nothing to do with the chopper scene"

I guess I dont get it. I just kind of build what I want, no matter if its popular or not. Cant really picture not building something that I want, just because of the people that might do the same thing across the country.

If he is getting into Ducati bikes, he is just going from one scene to another. I love sport bikes as well, but dealing with yuppies... no thanks.
