Going for a c-spine fusion next week and threw this together to hold my phone on my bedrail so I can view it conveniently.

I previously used the same clamp with a flat sheet metal plate (cover for a 4x4 electric box) and Velcro to hold a conventional phone for my father. The protruding bolts keep the bedrail from sliding too far into the clamp where there is less grip. Bedrail sizes may vary.

The holder etc are RAM parts off Ebay (I had them on hand as I use a lot of their gear). Lots of variations including tablet holders so if you are gonna be bedridden for a while you can be much more comfortable. Parts shown below are examples, see Ebay for good pics of their stuff. I use a 1" ball with long 1/4"-20 stud and all-metal locknuts from the hardware store. You want locknuts for this and you'll see why. You have a variety of 1" ball clamp length choices and X-Grip sizes to choose from. Their 2" line is more for laptops and large tablets.
