Did alot of clean up to some parts...
Being the motor was took apart 25 years ago and sat that long, most of the vial motor parts are not usable ....
The heads, jugs, cases (Left side has seen a repair that doesn't look all that good) rocker housings, lower spring buckets, rods (Needs there are new races and bushings) cam cover, and lifter blocks can be saved.... The rest is in bad, bad shape, due to rust and ware....
The crank-pin for sure has seen better days....
And the flywheels..
Being we are in need of these motor parts... Ordered a set of T&O wheels for the 61" stroke of 3-1/2.... This EL is the last year for the small case and wheels.. O.D. is the 8-1/8 if it was made one year later still being the 61" motor the wheels would have been 8-1/2 O.D.
With all of T&O Flywheels they will have the larger taper of the 41 and up FL crank-pin... They do not make the step-pin taper as what the early EL's and U's used...
-------------------------------------------------------
Found a bit of more work to do...
Was wanting to get the heads and jugs under powder so when the parts come in I would be able to assembly the heads....
Got the front jug/head looking good had to weld back a fin and fill a hole... It's ready for the powder...
On the rear head only a hole needed to be filled with weld...
Started to do the clean up on the jug and found a broke fin....More welding will be in line to do...
That will slow up the powder some...
Just as well got a world of parts to get...and wait for..
Powder laid down nice.....
Valve parts came in.... Wanting to get the heads started with the machine work....
Had a bit of rust on the rods. Since some grinding was needed to get under the rust, went a bit further and polished them.
More new is showing up...
Looks alot better than the ones that came with this job..

The rust sure did it's thing in some areas that could cause problems...
The head gasket area on this jug is one...
Will do a step cut to get under the rust and leave a step for more crush on a fire ring head gasket...
As in the photo below shows...
Going to do a 0.010 over bore to clean up the rust on the I.D.Last edited by Dragstews; 05-31-2014, 5:21 PM.Take my 45 and outrun em all ..Comment

Tell me.....
Getting all the parts together for the lower end...
Doesn't look all that well down there too...
Case been repaired ... Not what I would call a "Cat's Ass" job was done on it....
Thinking about what to do bout it....???
I may have a plan...
Got a new set of flywheels in the stock stroke for the 40 EL.... These have the late 41 and up FL crank-pin tapers....
Was going to put back the OEM rods of the day...
Started on the recond job of doing.... But right in the middle of the creek ...changed horses..!!!
Hate dat when I do dat...

Have a world of parts coming in today.... wanting to get the Heads together and work my way down from there...
That turn into a chore.... The OG Rocker housings was sent to the platers for some shiny... They didn't like them being the Old sand cast had many pot holes... On this order that I will see today are new ones... They are pressure casted... Hoping that they will be chromable...Take my 45 and outrun em all ..Comment

Bring y'all up to speed on this build...
The heads turned into a chore to do...
Had to go to oversize valves on the intakes and do seat replacements on the exhaust...
Made up a fixture to allow doing this work in a head machine..
Made the spinning of tools easier
Chase all threads and found one that needed a Heil-Coil...
Exhaust seats went in good and was cut ...
The cuts went down without a lot of hand work...
Packing the springs for a Leineweber cam is going well...
Soon the heads will be done and set aside for a little while until the lower end is worked over...
Did the jugs a while back got some more work to do on the gasket surface due to rust...
They had been bored to .030 over.... I wanted to get a set of .060 pistons so as all the bad would be bored out ...
The owner wanted to try to bore them to .040...
Would not clear at the .040 over, had to go to the .060 and that was close being there was a belly in the ware of one jug...
The cut in the below photo was at .050, You can see the ware that it had...
Took a few light cuts just to see at what speck it did clean up at...
Below is .056 over...
Was very close and the rust had a big bite on the bore too...
Did manage to get under the rust...
Got around to doing the balance job on the crank....
Also did the match on the recip. wieghts of both Rod/Piston combos...
Had a 10 gram spread being the rear was heavier.... Took off the 10 grams by removing 5 from the piston and 5 from the rod...
===============================================
Wheels are drilled and just a few more needed parts will have all that is needed for assembly of them...
Do have the need for using the shafts for fitting the bearings to both case bushings, so can't lock and load just yet until that chore is done...
Then the wheels can be trued...Last edited by Dragstews; 05-31-2014, 4:08 PM.Take my 45 and outrun em all ..Comment

As bad as I wanted to add more stroke to this build, I was told to go back stock (By the Owner) Did shave off a few pounds of weight off the left wheel...
Been waiting for a box of chrome to show up that I sent off...
It made it back today...
Gave me something to do...
