belt primary converted to chain primary and the starter shaft is now to long

Picked up a '75 FXE that someone tried to convert to a Sturgis model. I removed the belt drive primary that was put on and got all the parts to convert it back to a chain primary. When i got everything back togeher the starter shaft is now staying engaged on the ring gear. The belt drive basket is definetley wider than the chain one. Any advice on how I can remedy this problem besides going to kick start only.

Download a parts book then compare belt and chain drive part numbers for the starter shaft and anything else that's different between systems. IIRC the starter jackshaft lengths are different.
