Once and a great while my father buys some cool shit off eBay. Well, he did it again, this time it is a 70's 103" Shovelhead Drag racing bike. This thing is NUTS. The story he has from just picking it up was enough to validate it.
Some quick specs:
103" Shovelhead motor, S&S Super B, huge jugs, runs on race fuel
Stock built tranny with an air shifter
Harley flat tracker forks? super lightweight, modified with steering damper
Now this thing is a tad rough, as you can see. Plans are to refinish it as a show bike, with the occasional run down the track. Apparently this thing ran 9's in the 1/4.
Yesterday we got the bright idea to run it down our road. I was the brave soul to man it. My father and I filled the air tank for the shifter and made sure the kill switch was working (which is set of ignition points with a piece of leather in-between tied to a boot lace-that when pulled the points make contact and short the motor out) After kicking the son of a bitch forever, it fired up and I ran it up the driveway to the road. I rolled on the throttle in 1st gear than wacked the shifter button and held on for dear life. Every time i hit the button it would go back onto the wheelie bar. I came to the crossroad and turned around, holding the clutch with my right hand and using my left to downshift the bike. Got it back into first and saw my dad at the end of our driveway down the road. This time I pinned it all the way through 4th, let off and grabbed the front brake while trying to find the rear. I went to pull in the clutch and it wasn't there! Luckily I held the brakes long enough to stall it out. Come to find out I broke the linkage for the clutch on top of the tranny.
"This thing sounds like a top fueler!" is all my dad said as I rolled down the driveway shaking.
