lace paint jobs

i'm workin on a fender and tank, somethin real simple but.....i want a little lace in it.

anyone who has painted with lace can ya give me some pointers.

i'm usin rattle can, so far it seems like to much spray and it gets cloudy

i'm guessin i gotta streatch it the best i can so its good and tight on the tank, light layers.

should i just let the paint dry while the lace is still on there or pull it when i'm done sprayin?

i'll throw up some pics of what i've been practicing on

what are your tips?

Use a light mist of spray adhesive on the lace to hold it in place.

awesome, i was wondering if i could do something like that. does it just come off when you scuff it up to clear it?

I pulled the lace over the tank and taped the corners and sides. make sure theres no ripples. spray a nice even coat. don't take it off to quick. let it dry a second.

Some lace doesn't tape well, so I use blue tac (the poster hanger stuff) over tape. Just don't stick it directly to the paint, it doesn't react well.

I taped over all the areas I didn't want lace on, then pulled a big peice of lace tight over the whole thing and taped it to the bottom of the tank. Then you spray light coats, emphasis light, a few times and peel the lace off. If you put the paint too thick, the smaller parts of the lace wont show up.

Best of luck, I did mine with spray cans, as did lots of others, so it can be done!!! Just have patience with it and take your time!

where the lace is, is that a black base coat then candy that goldish when you sprayed the lace?

I found this at a swap for $10, I loved the scheme, but it had been used by an old grey beard had it hanging in the yard as a bird feeder.





Decided to do a flake base. (Walmart Glitter Spray paint from the craft section)



Taped off the design.



Taped off the panels and painted black on the whole thing.

Pulled off the back panel and taped the lace tight over the whole thing and sprayed light coats of black over it.



The sunrise side was a bit harder, and I think I could do a better job after having done it once, I painted the bottom yellow and I used a straight peice of cardboard and hit it with black.





I cut out the moon and stars and hit them with the yellow and peeled the tape.



Peeled the rest of the tape.

Not bad for a first shot and with the most primitive of materials. I'm pretty comfortable that the next one I could do much better. Because I learned quite a bit with this one. But it was fun and I did it myself, and thats what its really about anyway. I used a satin clear spray paint so that gas doesn't mess it up if some spills.

Youre going to heavy with the paint. Back the can off about 18 inches and dust it a few times and pull the lace.

I was told by a painter friend of mine that you can paint with spray cans, but clear it with good quality clear (not spray paint) and the finish will look almost pro. I have seen him do it, and it looks pretty good.
