Sportster Transmission - 5 Speed in a 4?

So I'm going to be cracking into my Sportster to figure out what the fuck happened to the Transmission on my way to the WPR. Whilst cruising Craigslist I came across a guy selling a 5 Speed out of a 2002. I've been under the impressions since owning it, that a 5 won't fit in a 4 HOWEVER, when I look up XL Transmissions on eGay I see them listed for 1991-2003?

So does anyone know if a 5 Speed will fit into a bike that's a factory 4?

Actually I believe that 1992 there was an option for 4 or 5 speed tranny. 1993 was the first year that all sportys had the 5 speeds put in.

Pretty sure you can slide the 5 speed right in there...A word of caution with it being an '02 though; If I'm not mistaken the moco changed the gearing in 2000 or 01 to 03 models which led to some folks getting premature wear from their first and third countershaft gears which causes some weird slippage

He does say in the listing that there's a "skip" in first gear. Maybe I'll pass on it for now.

I've got a '90 Sportster and looked for some way to put 5 gears in it to no avail. I figure when it needs a rebuild i will just replace it with a later model motor with a 5 speed, they go for $1500 on ebay on a regular basis.

Unless you need that extra gear down low, I wouldn't change it. The final drive ratio is the same on both the 4 and 5 speed.
