Help: clutch bolt on an 81 cb750c?

Im stumped on how to get the bolt off that holds the clutch plates in.

In the Clymer manual it says use a strap wrench around the clutch basket, but in the video (link below) i took, the strap wrench would do nothing.
Now if the bike is in gear and i turn the bolt it turns the drive sprocket as well. would it damage anything if i used that resistance to remove the bolt?

can someone tell me EXACTLY how to get this bolt off?

Also a mechanic at my local motorcycle shop recommended that i use a pneumatic impact to "zip" the bolt off. Any input on this?
- are the threads right handed (right, tight. left, loose?). Id like to know 100% before/if i take the impact to it.

I can't remember if it's right hand thread or left, but there are lock tabs that hold the nut on. Also you can definitely put it in gear and lock down the drive sprocket. Shoot me your email in a pm and I'll send you the factory manual for the clutch removal.

Thanks for the response.

The lock tabs were bent up and out of the way when I was trying to remove the bolt. I will try to get it off using the resistance from the drive sprocket later today, thanks.

The bolt has rhd threads.

How did you end up doing it? I was having a hard time getting the bolt back on and tightened to specs.

To get it off----
1.I bent back the locking tab(s)
2. Backed the bike up on a wall (back tire on wall)
3. Put my wrench on the bolt ( with special socket for the bolt)
4. Steady slow pressure on the wrench until it was free.


Getting it back on. I just put it back on and "felt" the torque. Not a good habit but I've had very, very bad luck with torque wrenches on this bike.

What problem are you having getting the bolt back on?
Is it not lining up with a lock tab?
What torque are you setting it to? Iirc (at work now) I think the manual say 35-44lbs on the bolt?

It's been about a month since I looked at it, but I think the clutch plates were slipping (just like in your video for losening the nut). With no springs to keep the clutch plates compressed, they slipped and spun when I tried to tighten the down the nut. Am I missing something simple?

When I did it I had the bike in 1st gear. When you spin that nut when the Nike is in gear it turns the front drive sprocket as well.

So that said, I used the resistance from that? Does that make sense? Like the chain will tighten making resistance?

Dude -
When you are trying to get that bolt off, after bending the washer up, put a quarter in the gears to prevent them from moving, and voila! Done it quite a few times, and it works like a charm...
