Ride Report Forum

So I've been spending some time on the ADVrider forum lately, and if you can stomach the full body armor and sport touring bikes there is a ton of great content on there with pictures and descriptions of rides all over the country.

Just wondering if this is something we could/should bring to the 33. I would love to see more of what rides are going on with all of the members on this forum, pics of bikes in cool destinations, route and food reports, etc. We all know the Junk Pile is going nowhere fast and it seems the most common argument to the stupidity is "ride your bike more" I agree, let's do it prove some of us care more about having fun and riding our bikes than arguing about 1%er politics and rap sheets.

Thoughts?

The main forum is totally appropriate for "ride report" kinds of threads. I can spend hours on ADVRider looking at some of the rad places people have been, super inspiring and I'd love to see more of that content on here. Ride reports are way more fun to read and look at when it's on something custom and not just another BMW full of farkles!

Yeah the event forum is great, but once the event is announced and hyped a little the thread is over and pictures are never added.

It's not a bad idea at all.
We have the Brolodex and the events section.......
But those are really kinda "regional" in interest.
As in..... I doubt you are going to look at the pics/ story on the Violation Tour just as I'm not gonna tear through pics in the Bacon Run thread.

I know I tend to stay on the Main for.......um, I mean Junkpile. And occasionally check out the Tech pages and hope to see something in my area pop up on the Brolodex.

I guess what I'm saying is that this site is what we make of it.
Maybe instead of innernet fighting in the Junkpile, WE (self included) start posting more about these runs/ trips we went on in.............

The Main Forum!
If Beanhead taught us anything is that people love PICS about as much as free stickers.
I love browsing through what popped up at your local bike night or seeing sweet jump shots.

Just sayin............
Winter is over. Let's get out and ride. Snap some pics. Meat dudes. Wrench, ride, repeat.

I can see it now, this could be a good thing as long as whomever posts stuff up can back up their glossy photos with some good narration. The hardest thing for me is remembering to get some photos as I'm enjoying my ride. LivingCanvas and I did a recon up to Crystal Lake up Hwy 39 earlier this year and here's my ride report from it:

I got up at zerodarkthirty and fired up the bike and hit the road, I stopped off at where the 74 and 15 meet to see if Fish433 made it out. Waited a couple minutes then hit the road again, Fish didn't get my message till 7:30, it was 6:20, maybe next time. Met up with LivingCanvas off Foothill, topped up my tank and hit the road. Pulled a dumbass rookie stunt at an intersection going into Azusa (great for a first impression) and headed up 39 towards Crystal Lake. This early in the morning the windy road up the mountain was almost free of traffic but riding onto the sun around some of the corners wasn't ideal. Part of the way up we pulled over for a better look at one of the reservoirs:

And got a look at what we had to look forward to as we wound our way up the canyon.

The road surface on the was up wasn't too bad but I couldn't tell if it was my new tires scrubbing in or stuff on the road surface that felt a little sketchy. I'm not as aggressive a rider as I used to be so I settled back and kept things fun without going too overboard. (note to self: pick up some mids for the dyna). Up at the cafe near the lake California budget cuts became more apparent the road surface declined more the higher we got. I'm pretty sure of the camping areas were closed regardless of what the website says. The cafe was kind of a minimart thing with a kitchen that serves up breakfast burritos, coffee, burgers and other fare but its cash only, no plastic. The guy that runs it is a nice enough guy he hooked us up with coffee and some kind of cake like thing for Canvas even though all we had between us was $2.

We hung out talked bikes and looked around till the visitor center opened and we could get more information about the surrounding area. We even made friends with the local hoodrat, a scruffy old orange tomcat.

The visitors center is run by a volunteer that would have talked our ears off for hours if we would have let him. We were given the grand tour of his little station where he proudly displays a laminated letter of appreciation for over 1000 hours of volunteer service from Mr. Obama.

So according to our local guide an Olde Tyme Motorcycle Club gathering up here is going to be pretty unlikely. The website saying the camp grounds are open is misleading, we didn't even make it out to where the group camping area is to do any scouting. Even if other sites are open there would be plenty of granola heads wanting to spoil an evening of debauchery and mayhem.
Was the trip a bust? Hell no, the ride up is very worth it even if its just to grab a bite before heading back down the mountain. I'd recommend going up early like we did because by the time we started to head down the amount of traffic increased significantly. There were herds of bicyclists enjoying masochistic self abuse as they grinded their way up the mountain and huddled packs of them cramming up the corners on the way down. Without the sun in my eyes on the way down it was easier to see and judge the condition of the road and I'd say overall its not too bad but it is in a continuous state of change. Lots of sand and rocks across portions of the road. We even passed by a minivan that got taken out by a mini boulder that attacked some time between our ascent and our descent. No assumptions here, gotta keep a sharp eye out for not only the falling rocks but the bike cops. There were at least 10 going up as we made our way back towards Azusa.

After stopping off to top off tanks LivingCanvas and I had to part ways, There was a frantic text from TOL about The Kid screaming nonstop and her waking up with whatever pestilence he'd been oozing all week.

This is where the realization hit me, not only were budget cuts affecting our park system but also the quality of materials used to manufacture license plates.

Our only casualty during the ride, my plate didn't make it out in 100% unscathed.
This what you had in mind?

The above report wasn't really focusing on the ride, more about the ability to use the campground for a future bacon feeding frenzy, I would have written it more about the actual ride if my after action was to report on the ride.

IF the form was set aside a spot for ride reports (might be a good idea for other form sections on the site) it might be helpful to have a multi tiered set up:

RIDE REPORT: (form heading)

1) Region: (sub heading 1)
-- a) South West - Nevada, Arizona & New Mexico
-- b) Pacific Northwest - Washington, Oregon
-- c) West Coast - California, Baja California
Etc.

2) State: (sub heading 2)
-- aa) Arizona
-- bb) Nevada
-- cc) New Mexico

3) Local: (sub heading 3)
-- aaa) Las Vegas / Mohave
-- bbb) Reno / Sierra Nevadas
-- ccc) Great Basin
-- ddd) Columbia Plateau

4) actual posts of ride reports

So, a post would be like this:

Ride Report > South West > Nevada > Las Vegas / Mohave: J. Edgar Damn It! (Ride Report about ride around Hoover Dam)

Then again I may have just gone Hiroshima and nuked the whole concept.

Probably the best forum thread I have ever followed...

Pete, that is exactly the kind of stuff I was thinking. Just a little narration with pictures and reviews of routes, restaurants, camping spots, etc.

Sounds like for now Bill just wants them posted in the Main Forum so maybe we just title them all with a RR: before the title so they don't get lost in the fray.

I am with you too man, I just have to remember to take the photos. Supposed to ride with some buddies to some state parks today for some swimming and chilling so I'll try to get my first Ride Report up tonight.

I'm going to see if I can get a bar mount for my iPhone life proof case and maybe cut the "trigger finger" off on an older pair of gloves so shooting on the go is an option. The camera might not be as good as my Nikon but its still not bad when it comes to point and shoot and will work fine till I can get a go-pro or something else I can set up to shoot time lapse stuff. Probably not going to be able to put another one together till after the next bacon run, and I'm not going to lug the iPad around so I can type one up on something bigger than my iPhone but I think I can dictate a report into my notes and then edit it later after we get back. This kind of thing actually makes me want to start heading out and going on random adventures into the uncomfortably weird.

I feel you. I always see 100's of people taking photos at the (larger) events most often promoted or talked about on Chop Cult. Then, rarely, do I see those photos here. Now, sure, often times there's some of (us) you who are consistant and do put the effort into posting those photos. That's great and I (we) appreciate it! Thank you.

Some other poeple take photos for different reasons perhaps, their own blogs, their own personal collections? Whatever, then game over. No photos. No one is twisting your arm I guess to post them. You might not even be Chop Cult related... wanna guess how many people were at Born Free 4 and neer been on Chop Cult? Probably about 5,000-10,000 of them. Figure if there are (like) 10,000 33's worldwide and there were approx. 15,000 people at BF4... there you go.

I'd vote for more photo threads in the main forum because once the event has passed, the event forum isn't really the ideal place for continuing to post up after-photos. Take the "Born Free Four PLEASE!!!" photo post currently going on the main forum. That works, anyone who took photos at the event and wants to share them is welcome to add them.

If you made a journey to parts unknown or Unicorn Falls, Iowa, and want to share the ride story and pics I'd totally say YES, the main forum is the ideal local. Well, just some thoughts on the matter.
