Spacer question

I had to pull my front wheel off to put a new tube in. The spacers fell out when I pulled the axle out. The "driver's side" spacer (fat one) has a small "divot" in the side. Is that supposed to be against the wheel, or is it supposed to go against the fork? I've got a clymer manual, but it doesn't say anything about it.

Okay, so I googled it over and over again, and I finally found another forum that had a thread on this. It said to put the notches on the inside (against the wheel, not the fork). I went that route. I don't really see why it would matter, but I also don't want my wheel to fall of when I'm blasting down the road. If anybody has insight as to what the notches are for, please chime in. And, if I did it wrong, let me know. I'd rather drop the wheel and switch it instead of loose the wheel on the road.

It doesn't matter what direction the notch goes. I was told they were used to id what spacers come from what manufacture, I don't really know if that is true or not.

I assume you're talking about the groove on the spacers. If those are the ones you're talking about than it doesn't matter which way they face. If you took the wheel off than you should have realized that it's physically impossible for the wheel to fall off if you're using the cross bolt on the axle that prevents it from sliding out if you were to lose your axle nut. You should have these torqued properly anyway.

yeah, i wasn't worried about anything falling out. i'm not an idiot. I get how it goes together, and how it works. it was my first time pulling my wheel off. i torqued it to specs, and it rolls fine. i just wasn't sure what the grooves were for, and if they were supposed to be facing a certain direction. like i said, i checked the manual, but didn't see anything about it. it just said, "make sure you put the spacers in correctly." that made me nervous. i guess they were talking about the correct spacer going on the correct side?

I pretty sure he didn't mean to come across so antagonistic. Ya, the spacer’s orientation doesn’t make a difference as long as you have them on the correct side.
