So, I've ran into a bit of a dilema. I came across a craigslist ad for a 1966 Sportster 900. The frame is from 1966 with a 1972 motor. Needs a complete overhaul but the engine is free and transmission seems to be sound. The guy was asking $1800, talked him down to $1300
He has a title for 66' frame, and a title for the 72' motor. The title for the frame is clear, no leans and could be titled in my name. I could not find any VIN # on the frame, so I couldn't match it with the title. The motor's title has no leans, but was signed by someone as the "purchaser". So the motor is titled in someone's name, and on the back of the title, was purchased from another individual. So basically, I cannot be the purchaser of the motor as it has already been sold to someone else.
I have had this problem in the past with another bike. According to the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles, it is illegal to skip a purchaser. As in, I could not get the bike titled in my name as it had someone else's signature as the "purchaser" on the title. I had to track down the person who was the rightful owner of the bike and have them get a re-print of the original title.
Im not sure if there is another way around dealing with this.
Anyone have any words of advice? Or should I pass on this clusterfuck?

Due to the year of the two titles, and what you have explained I would pass. I could elaborate, but my past experience tells me walk away, there will be other deals. My .02¢

yea the 1300 sounds reasonable..but like they said 66 wouldnt have a title the 72 motor would though..seems odd..sucks though at 1300 if it was all legit it would be nice!

I have a 62 frame with a 68 ironhead motor and both numbers are on my title.
I was worried when I first bought it because it seemed strange - but dmv told me it wasn't so odd - and that adding a number was not a big deal when something has been changed. I'm sure different states have different issues though - for 1300 - I'd buy it.....

1903-1969 Harley Only title the motor,, the # on the motor must match the title
1970 - up the VIN is stamped into the frame , that number must match the title

Yeah - I wasn't thinking to mention - the title is still the 62 HD - but since the motor was changed - the 68 motor number was added- so it still is titled 62 , but has the new motor number on it - Your right though - no numbers on my frame - Thats why I was confused about the #'s when I bought it .
I might add - at the dmv here - things can go real smooth - so I can see the last guy who owned it walking in and just adding new motor number with no problem - why they didn't remove the old number is beyond me - but hey it works !
