Guys who run a PMA charging system in their XS, get in here

Okay, so I know I need a new charging system for my XS. I know I'm gonna get a PMA set up from Hugh. I'm just having a hard time pulling the trigger because of the $310 price tag. Basically I need you guys to convince me to buy one.

How do you like yours? How did the install go? Any problems? Wish you would have gone another direction? Weather's getting nice, and my bike's looking pretty sad.

Thanks dudes.

Do the do man, you wont regret it. the biggest pain in the ass was getting the old rotor off, which ya gotta be carefull if using a j-puller so ide recomend renting/borrowing a rotor remover peice, check out Hughs site or XS650 Central to see what it looks like. The Pamco works great with it but you gotta start considering all the other expenses that go hand in hand with the swap which in the end are worth it. Pull that old wiring harness and chuck it. Heres the diagram i used for wiring my bike. hope this helps

My very favorite chopper of all, has an xs650 in it! I have not changed over, but, if I do, I think I should have someone who really knows what they are doing to accomplish such a task, When I get into a big change, such as this, I really feel as if it should be done by someone who does things with great precision, hopefully, when that time comes, I will be in contact with someone who can accomplish this!! When this gets done, a lot of changes are to be done to get things to work correctly, such as the ignition, and so on!!!

Already got a PAMCO in, and she's running pretty good, but I need to tune the carbs a little better. Charging system was DOA when I bought the bike, so that's where I'm at now. I'm pretty sure I've still got my rotor puller from back in the dirtbiking days, so tools aren't a problem. Wiring is half done, all I need to do is run the PMA when I get it, and turn signals to keep johnny law off my ass, and finally I'll probably end up going to a capacitor in a little leather mount or something classy looking. Thanks for the advice, I'll save your wiring diagram too!

Hugh's PMA is actually really easy to install. He has a really great "how-to" on his website and theres also the thread here on chopcult called the PMA Banshee swap or something like that, which he also wrote. Im running a sparx capacitor, but I've also ran the accel and both work pretty good but you might have some light-dimming issues, so you could run two at the same time OR get one of those cigarette pack-sized batteries and I hear those solve all those problems. 650 central has them for sale for about 20 bucks I think. Also, I picked up the "Kung Fu" dual output coil from 650 central and it works great, fits in the same place my old coils were. Also, you'll want to get the 5K spark-plug caps which NGK has (im sure theres other brands too). You're going to want to wire your bike differently than mine because of the blinkers, etc, but there are tons of awesome xs650 PMA wiring diagrams on Chopcult that'll get the job done. Heres what I use to house my capacitor, ignition switch, and fuse. works good for now but it definitely aint strong enough to last much longer. Happy Choppin!

AROK, Hugh's PMA swap and a Pamco Pete ignition are the first things you should do to a stock running XS650 motor.

Stop being a bitch and get the damn thing. To fix the stock system will probably be at least a third of that and is no where near as reliable.

Both Xs's I've built and run all I've had to do is clean the stator and/or clean and change the brushes...no issues with either....my daily rider I did do the pamco unit and switched to a single coil.

The PMA should be your first item on the list.

Seriously. Stock charging systems sucked when new. Simple install and the 2 wire reg/rec makes wiring the chop SO easy.

Here is the NEW Install how-to:

http://hughshandbuilt.blogspot.com/2...built-pma.html

Coupled with a Pamco, you'll fall in love with the simplicity of your wiring and how reliable the bike will be...

Thanks for all the props fellers - Hugh

Read through it, looks really simple. Don't forget to draw a funny picture on the box for me like I requested!

I switched to Hugh's PMA kit after my stock system failed in san diego on the way to the EDR last year. missed out on all the fun because the factory shit died at the worst time.

Your order is "under review" from Paypal... Once it clears, we'll ship out ASAP. And as for a funny pic, we can make that happen (if we remember)

Gotcha. I specified "pay with credit card", is PayPal just the mediator here or something? Is it normal for a credit card payment to be "under review"?
