The old army field manual for the 1911 .45 says to shoot for the hip bone, ouch!! Fuck that shoot me center mass please.
Thanks Tyronin, I wish I was awesome, but alas I'm just an old geezer. Right now I am really vulnerable, I have my right arm in a sling because I slipped on some stairs and either tore or sprained my rotator cuff. Takes forever to get in to see an orthopedist.
I agree with the old army field manual for several reasons. (1) At close range it is easier to put one in the pelvic girdle than it is to put it center of mass, just bring it out from behind your leg and only raise it slightly before pulling the trigger. It is hard as hell for them to deflect the weapon. (2) Firing into the pelvic girdle almost always knocks the opponent down and reduces the threat. Just grab someones belt from the back or side and see how much a simple jerk takes them off balance. (3) In panic or low light situations people who are not highly trained will almost always shoot high - putting it center of mass. (4) In the lower abdomen and thighs are the descending aorta and femoral arteries, a hit to either of these will bleed a person out in seconds. (5) Plausible deniability (sic), "I didn't mean to kill him, I was shooting for his leg".
This is what I recommend in my book "Strictly Street Stuff" without all the reasons. Pretty much the same applies for use of the knife.

grandpa,
Citizens shooting in self defense should not be shooting to stop. If you don't mean to kill, you should not be firing your weapon. The threat of great bodily injury or loss of life should be met with deadly force. Shooting to stop or wound can be flipped by an overzealous anti-gun DA as meaning you are not in grave danger of great bodily injury or loss of life. Shooting for the pelvis should be used as a last resort after center mass hits have failed to stop the threat of great bodily injury or loss of life.
Respectfully,
johnny rainbow

Just say you panicked.
I just imagine if you make some 5 page statement about ALL THE THOUGHTS that went through your head and your selection of target meant you may not have been in immediate danger.....which may put you in the hot seat.
Or that you were even carrying a weapon (in some circumstances) may even imply that you were hoping for trouble.
Personally, I don't live in a terribly dangerous area.
I make it a point to avoid situations where I would need a weapon.
I don't carry a weapon, not even a knife, for fear of it being used against me if I ever find myself in a pinch.
Plus, odds are I'd just get in trouble because I have it.
If somebody is gonna rob me, they better be stronger than me, or have something to use against me.
And if they have a gun....fine take my money or whatever.
But if I pull a knife or a gun on them.....I just imagine that would be what makes them decide to go ahead and knife me or shoot me as opposed to if I were "unarmed".
I know it may come across as weak.......
But I'd rather avoid the whole scenario and go on doing my thing. I don't want to go to prison, and I don't want to kill some crackhead, and I don't want to get shot.
And if you must shoot somebody, you must shoot them. You gotta do what you gotta do.

You wrote a book called Strictly Street Stuff? Dude, you fukn rock!! I need a copy asap. I have some street stuff experience, I too know the value of striking below the waist when there are witnesses present. I love collecting street oriented self defense books, I have one on fighting with a straight razor from the 80's, good stuff.

that's like me stoling off on a 35 year old - which would absolutely happen depending on the circumstances.
jeez, i was unaware of how many people on this message board never lost their temper and never looked for trouble every once in a while.
it's unfortunate that the dude got shot. did he deserve whatever he had coming? sure, i suppose. but does it make the fact that he was shot right? no, not at all. hope homie makes a speedy recovery and then ups the ante on that old cock sucker.
The old man should have put one through the asshole's head.

You can get them cheapest and fastest from Amazon. It has a 5 star rating on there. I will bring a few to "Hell on Wheels" this weekend and give you one if you are going to be there. I just give them away to bikers as long as they last. Look me up, I will be with the crew from Biltwell. Just look for the old geezer wearing a sling on his right arm.

I'm not going to hell on wheels, but I am going to born free. I've been training MA for a while, and I concentrate on the practical side of street self defense, throat chops, eye gouges, groin strikes, sticks, bottles, knives, etc. I would love to read your book. It's funny, all the fancy training in the world, and when the shit really goes down, all you do is the basics, so I stick to the basics. Practical application, that's what I train for. Sorry to jack the thread, don't fuck with old guys, that's the lesson.

Grandpab, just read the sneak peak into your book on amazon. That's the real deal right there. We should share a couple stories, I'm kinda like a younger version of you, and I would love to learn from your awesome stories. I too love to tell a good fight story, not to toot my own horn, but to entertain friends with a good story that involves violence and humor. My friends and I always talk about writing a book when we get older. Hope to see you soon, I'm staying in San Clemente at my sister's house for Born Free, not far from Oceanside. Don't worry, I'm not a young tough guy trying to prove himself, I was, now I'm all about having a good time and learning things.
