68 650 bonneville was running great then it broke up in 2nd gear and died. No spark
coming out of the joe hunt magneto. Coil, condenser, or something else?
1st. disconnect the kill wire and see what happens.
To test it you need to clamp both plugs on to the head connected to the plug wires and spin it over.
there was a batch of mags from Hunt a while back ( with a date code in 2009-2010) that had the rotor magnets incorrectly timed to the coil, this usually blew the condenser first then the coil, a temporary fix was to add a another condenser to the kill wire terminal.
The only real fix is to send it back to Hunt.
There is a 3/8 hex on the backside that drives it . Remove your mag and see if the hex is busted or rounded off . Also see if the little socket shaped thing that bolts to the camshaft turns or is loose . If it is loose remove it and make sure there is nothing preventing the taper from locking down . then reinstall the mag . remember you have to time the drive first then the mag second .
Broken bolt removed and im ready to reinstall mag. Install and timing instructions
would be great.
Thanks craig
Set your motor to 38 Deg Btdc . and lock the motor it makes it much easier . Install the drive socket into the cam end but do not tighten it down yet just snug . install the 3/8 hex into the socket . Next put the mag on rememer to gap the points first on the bench . rotate the mag to the point were the points just start to open . If there is not enough slot to get you there twist the points cam a bit . once you have it to were the points just open and there is some slot on both side of the mounting bolts then remove the mag and tighten down the socket drive . Reinstall the mag and set the points to just open and lock it down . Install the ground wire ,cap and leads . If you bike has timing marks use a strobe light and check timing if it does not then install a deg. wheel to check timing . The bike does not need to be running in order to check timing with a strobe since the timing does not advance .
This tool makes it way easy to do even in a parking lot at night .
